Family needs a second car.....

I've been fighting it for years but I think the time has come to get a second car - the arrival of our second child has put the nail in the coffin. Sad news is that I'll have to sell my motorbike to fund it but sure family comes first.

The current car my wife will use so I'm looking for a car for myself which can also double up to carry kids when the need arises. I'm thinking along the lines of a family saloon: Avensis, Passat, Mondeo etc.

My main use will be a 30 mile each way commute at least 3 times weekly, mostly motorway.

My preference would be for a diesel and the cheaper the tax the better although most cars I'm looking at are around the 1.9L. The more reliable the better.

Budget is around €5k but hoping I can swing another few quid.

    What are your suggestions?

    Audi a4 avant?

1.9tdi, loads of room in the boot and the back for the kids. I have had one for 4 years now and all its needed is 4 tyres, a service and a set of brake pads!

Cheers for that. Are they not a bit expensive? Be tough to find one under 100k miles and under 10 years old for my budget.

    I would definitely consider a Mazda 6

May not be an option, but what is the car that the child seats are going to be in.

I'd look at the NCAP rating of your current c

ar and if you're happy with it belt away with what you're planning, otherwise baby no. 2 could be more expensive than you expected.

On your current budget, and allowing for a further expansion

    I'd buy something like this

Under budget, lovely car to drive and that engine is bullet proof Imo.

Have a look at Skoda octavia 1.9tdi. for 5k you would buy a nice newer model one the 2005 up model. Very reliable, economical, comfortable you can't really go wrong. Not everyone likes them but definitely have a look at a few. If I was in your position Id buy an octavia great family car.

What is your current car the reason I ask is it a saloon or people carrier and is it already diesel.

your commute is 300 miles a week if working a 5 day week so 15k a year, how far is your wife from work again as if you already have a diesel or a big saloon two can be expensive.

car tax will be 6-700 euro have you a no claims bonus or is it your wife's bonus on the car.

Bid diesels saloon are good value at present, if an 06 6speed Avensis is in your price range it will do 55mpg and are very reliable and comfortable also an 06 will have just done a NCT so you will have an idea of the condition and it is unlikly any boy racers will have had it previously.
