    Hi,

Anyone know the recommended timing belt interval in terms of mileage for a 1.6 petrol audi a4 B7 model.

Currently considering buying one which has 55K miles but would like to avoid a costly TB replacement. My diesel a4 is 60K miles for a TB so was wondering is this the same across the board or are petrols higher / lower ?

The interval is 75k miles or 5 years whichever comes first.

Don't pay any more than €320 or so for the timing belt kit and water pump job. The parts are cheap for the 1.6 and they are very easy to do.

Thanks yet again George. The car i want is 6 years old but 20K left till TB according to your post

In your opinion do you think the time period is important? For example if there was 40K miles up on the car say, but the TB was.... i dunno...7 years old, would it be urgent to change it on account of age in years rather than age in miles?

    .

My A4 is 06 with 80,000km and I don't think it's had a timing belt change. I should probably get onto that.

I think the 1.8T is different, from reading a few forums. I would be surprised if my mechanic didn't pick it up when i got it serviced a few months back.

do they usually check that on a normal service> i would have thought theyd only see if it needed replacing after dismantling the front of the car to gain access

The 1.8T has the 5 year interval as well.

The belt is made of rubber which is perishable over time as well as use. The recommended interval is for which ever comes first, mileage or time.

Getting the belt replaced is alot cheaper than having to rebuild or replace the engine as a result of a snapped belt. If you cannot get a definitive answer on whether it has already been changed or not then assume it hasn't and budget for it to be done asap. I would also take this into consideration in any price negotiations with the seller.
