    Hey there,

Can anyone recommend a good, simple and free solution for editing videos (avi, mpeg), for an amateur who wants to start posting stuff on youtube?

I tried windows movie maker and it's ok, but I was wondering if there's a better solution.

Also, if anyone knows of a free image editing tool that's better than artweaver - that would be awesome!

Cinelerra is pro-grade. Hard to learn but well worth it. Remaining 2 are easier, but less powerful.

List of video editing software (check open source section for "free" software:

I would just like to throw in a recommendation for Paint.NET instead of GIMP, I found GIMP to be one of the worst programs I ever put on my PC.

At a guess I would imagine it's related to WinGIMP's UI - it's far from intuitive (for understandable reasons, given that it's porting over from an environment where X servers exist to one where they don't) and can get in the way enough to be really frustrating while you learn how to use it.

It's very good software, but the Windows port is hobbled by a manky UI, so much so that for a bunch of people the preferred version is GIMPshop - a project that basically takes GIMP and reworks the UI to be more like Photoshop. Even if you've never used Photoshop, you'll probably prefer GIMPShop to Classic GIMP.

It was a few years ago that I installed it on my Windows PC but Fysh summed it up fairly well. I did put it on my Mac though a few months ago (genuinely couldn't find an alternative) and still hated it, the thing just seemed horribly unintuitive and difficult to use. Perhaps the original Linux version or the GIMPshop version are better.
