How small are you willing to go? 12.1" or there abouts is what I would want out of an ultra portable.

Looks like a good machine but my last laptop was a lenovo t400s which looks exactly like that so I'd like a change.

You could look at a 14" Samsung series 7. I tried a 15.6" model recently and was pretty impressed with it. The newer one (NP700Z4C) ships with an Ivy Brdige CPU and Kepler GPU.

Considering I have no interest really in playing games on my laptop.

All I do is:

-surf the web
-watch movies
-type things up
-do powerpoint presentations
-play music

however I would like a small and light computer for this

as you can see my needs are very basic.

Would I be an idiot to buy a macbook air 13"?

I suspect you will tell me yes. I've decided 14" is a bit big.

its small, light, well built, just a tad slow sometimes and has ~5 hours battery but its a great price.. far far below your budget but it will do what you want... it got really good reviews too...
