    Hi Folks,

I was made redundant in 2002 from an Computer Firm. I have a degree and masters in electronics. Since then I have done teaching in the UK before returning to Ireland where I taught Science and Maths. Unfortunately due to the cut backs I got let go last year and although I got work this year I am back looking for work again. This sector has become incredibly competitive with hundreds of applications for each job.

Hence I am considering going back to engineering. I don't care about holidays and such I went into teaching for a desire to educate kids and for job security but it hasn't worked out.

So I am wondering if people have any advice. I worked on computer hardware using logic analysers and firmware code listings to recreate errors found in the field. I didn't do a lot with the firmware. I was able to trace back errors on boards, swap chips etc. I also did a lot of configuration testing like new part compatibility. Setting up our servers on the network was also something I did in an operating system similar to Unix.

I think I was still a bit away from being a highly skilled in this area. So I am thinking would I be better doing software. I taught Java for a year to a Master Degree course before going into teaching and operating systems.

I could spend say 6 months coming up to speed on some new technologies and I know nothing is for certain the market could change like it did at the time of the dot com collapse but I need to give myself some hope I guess that I can get back to doing something where I don't feel like having a begging bowl in my hand.

What do you think would be good areas to go for. Ideally I'd like to get working in the Midlands or West say after two or three years. I am based around Athlone.

    Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks.

Should be a good few oppertunities out there for you 60 new jobs announced today by Xilinix.

It would be no harm to drop your CV into a few of these places like Xilinx while also looking at a few of the newer technologies.
