The State broadcaster spends an average of €€8,844 per edition of the chat show. But the taxpayer was saddled with a jaw-dropping bill of almost €30,000 for the lavish anniversary episode.

The numbers if they can be believed are interesting - under nine thousand euro per show seems very cheap, anyone know what the advertising card is for the show?

As I said on another thread last night, the bill would have been much less if they left Liam Neeson and Twink at home and invited Shane McGowan instead.

Well worth it, I really enjoyed the show.

But on June 1, though the guest numbers only doubled to 400, the refreshment costs were six times higher than normal at €8,165.

That's a little over €20 per person. Hardly extravagant.

The ratings and advertising it brings are, like it or not, vastly bigger to other shows too. So it's those that are hating on it both here and on Twitter every week paying for those drinks.

But far be it from me to analyse the figures fairly at the expense of senseless, blind outrage.

30 grand to pay for the production of probably the highest rated home made programs of the year seems fairly reasonable to me

A regular show apparently costs €30K.

The 50th anniversary was a hundred times better than a regular show (largely thanks to the booze).

Therefore, it was definitely worth the money.

I'm fairly confident that the show pays for itself what with it most likely having one of the most desirable ad spots, not to mention sponsorship during the show itself.

The anniversary show was great and definitely worth every penny.

I dont think so look at how much debt they are in and spend this on one night

Didn't read the article. (Haven't looked at that rag since April 1989).

I was going by my own (hazy ) memory of who appeared on the show that night.

Shame Shane wasn't on it then.

For what its worth, I don't begrudge the expense of the night.
It was one of the best Late Late Shows ever, and the cost is relatively small.

They spent a few quid on a Special episode that was the most watched show in the Country this year.

The State broadcaster said that on average over one million people – a 69 per cent audience share – tuned in to watch the programme over the course of its two-and-half-hour duration.

If they had done nothing to mark the 50th anniversary there would have been complaints that they were ignoring a Golden Opportunity to have a celebration.

They effectively paid for the outlay by having a reduced number of Fair City Episodes recently - sounds like a win for everyone!

The 50th was certainly very entertaining... And was also an interesting experiment....

Part 1: Pat + Gay + Tubridy = interesting, funny show...
Part 2: Tubridy on his own = dull, boring, predictable, safe...
Part 3: Pat + Gay back on = interesting, funny show...

It was like part 2 was the control experiment.. And we have established that the problem is not with The Late Late Show itself (though the show IS too long, which doesnt help)... The problem is with the host...
