    Hi all,

I'm trying to orgainise a mini society outing to a club outside Dublin (that's where we're from) preferably not more than 2 hours away and near a decent town for a bit of craic after.

There's a mixed bunch of talent in the group and we're also trying to keep our costs down. Can anyone recommend an open golf club .

We wold normally go to Borris in Carlow and stay in Kilkenny but accomm is through the roof at the moment and the GC is kind of booked up too.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks.

If you fancy a good course, good challenge and friendly welcome, come down and visit Esker Hills Offaly, just 5 mins outside Tullamore . Chat Caroline on 057 93 355999 and she will look after you. Societies are always welcome.

Plenty of pubs, craic, accomodation in Tullamore, try Tullamore Court Hotel , Bridge house hotel, Central hotel - Visit Scirrocos for great italian food or a fabulous steak ....

Loads of options out there with the M4 / M7

Athlone is only 1:30 away and has 4 course within 15 mins of each other, accommodation wouldn't be too bad either.

Tullamore has 2 great courses and is similar distance

Mount Wolseley in Carlow is a fine course.

Just a few that pop into my head from what we played.

Having played a society outing in Esker Hills I would echo every part of the above post.

Wexford Golf Club and it's right in the town with loads of hotels nearby.

Thanks Esker Man and link2007: But tried accom there and all those booked out. Seemingly an Atheltics meet of some sort on.

Will check out those CharlieIRL although as some of the lads haven't played in quite a while, so the lower profile course the better.

    Appreciate all though lads. Thanks.

You could try Highfield Golf & Country Club near Edenderry. They have lodges on site that they rent out. Might be worth a call.

Gowran Park in Kilkenny ticks all the boxes... Nice track, great value, just outside Kilkenny and an hour from Dublin....

Of course I'm a member so I might be a bit biased ;)

The Ballymascanlon is a great wee course outside Dundalk and the hotel beside it is excellent. Always welcoming to societies.

it is very expensive for an average course somewhere like royal tara would be closer and better value and welcome societies.

I would recommend Seapoint or headford myself.

Stay in Carlingford, play Greenore. Nice course and a good spot for pints.

Only an hour up the road. Did this recently and it was a good trip

Thanks guys for all your responses.

We eventually went with Waterford and will probably play the municipal course there. We've played it before and it's fine for some of the hackers that will be playing if not a bit unforgiving.

May see if there's another course that wouldbe friendly to our group that's not more than 15-20 miles away. any suggestions welcome.

Was surprised to see that hotel prices are in the region of 120 plus for a room; know it's the summer, but still.

    Anyway thanks again.

was just about to post an offer of a hotel on boards deals -2 for €49 in Creggane Court Athlone. Would have been ideal.

Thanks. But was actually on to them yesterday and was quoted 90 for a room. It's also about 2.5 miles from the town and is apparently very basic.

We're far too old in the tooth to be slumming it :) Like our creature comforts.
