Not so much a career change, as trying to broaden my skillset...

    Hi all,

In a serious rut at the moment. Working freelance in online marketing at the moment.

I have been thinking for the last 3 or 4 years of not so much changing "career" but trying to open up more opportunities for myself. Use the skills I already have built up and channel it into something else. I have been thinking about studying again.

I have been thinking about the Open University option, as I just can't afford to go back full time, and lose out on what little I am earning now!

I always liked languages, and speak French,Italian, and am learning Spanish. My languages are wasted on me at the moment.

"Emigrate" could be the first thing you might suggest if I like languages.

I have looked into maybe studying Italian,as I never studied it. I learned it from living there. But I can't find anywhere yet that offers a distance learning option. That's neither here nor there.

So, skills would be languages, technical writing background, and online marketing skills.

Essentially, my languages are wasted on me and have been for quite a while. I suppose, unless I am in London or Paris, they are going to be. Not much use for them in Limerick I think!! But I would like to use them in some capacity.

I think my technical writing background is almost redundant. The last time I worked as a technical writer was in 2004. I almost think my postgrad in it is redundant. I think possibly things have moved on a lot in it, and most jobs now seem to want people who are highly specialised, instead of just plain old document writing.

It's going to be up to me to decide what to do, but I feel like I am drifting along at the moment, not sure of any angle I could use.

If you work in online marketing why don't you learn SEO, web development, etc.?

Yeah, trying to learn SEO at the moment, well trying to learn more advanced stuff to be honest.
Online Marketing is something I don't see myself doing in 10 years time though, which is why I am thinking about a gradual change....
