Do you know what the fault with it is?

There is a very common fault with the e46 airbag system. The passenger seat has an occupancy sensor or seat pad which is fond of failing. If the same issue/system also exists in the e90 then turning off the light will not do anything as it immediately comes back on.

I'm not saying you have this exact issue but it is quite common

If this is the same thing this is how I sorted it.

    Used circuit from this link:

Better pictures here of removing components but used the circuit above:

    thanks for replies guys,

long story short - the car was in an accident, front right airbag was deployed, i had it replaced 2nd hand but didnt have time for the engineer to replace/reset ecu.

all other seatbelt retentioners etc were also replaced.

ive had a few garages try to reset the warning light but it keeps coming back.

    thanks

i had a similar issue on my e39. i bought a cheap air bag module scanner/reset tool on ebay 30-40e and i resold it easy after i was done. read the codes, googled what they ment. in my case i was getting "internal error" for the ecu. I sent the ecu off to a company in england via ebay to get it reprogrammed for 30e, i reinstalled it and it worked grand so it was fixed for 30e total!
airbag problems can be very expensive, try and fix it yourself imho.

The warning light is on because a fault has been detected in the system.

Clearing the warning without first identifying and repairing the cause of the fault is a pointless exercise, as your experience shows.

So you don't want somebody to merely reset the fault memory, any fool with a scanner can do that. You want someone who can actually fix the problem.

Apparently the crash data can be deleted using INPA, but have never done it myself. Have deleted other SRS errors on E46/E39 and MINI. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=671766

Where are you based? if your anywhere near me you can call over and i'll have a look.

The airbag module should always be replaced after a crash. The actual crash sensors therein can be damaged by the impact, and the fault shown by it when scanned isn't necessarily down to the presence of crash data - even if the data can be deleted, the module SHOULD be replaced.

I agree....i had a citroen xsara where the owner sent off the module to get the data cleared after an Accident
he refitted the module he then got me to clear any faults.....the fault cleared.

i said just to be sure i'd disconnect the pre-tensioner connections to see if the airbag system was working correctly..........BUT
the disconnected pre-tensioner did not bring up any airbag faults...
when i disconnected the drivers airbag it did'nt bring up a fault either..:eek:

So...I don't think clearing crash data from airbag modules is safe practice ...:eek:

i dont think you can draw a valid conclusion based on one incidence.

surely the faulty sensors should be replaced and the ecu then reset.
