Somebody has been playing Flight Simulator :) What you are referring to is the "callsign" it will usually just be the aircraft reg like EI-BGS (said using phonetic alphabet of course) Airliners will have company callsigns like Shamrock, Cactus, Speedbird followed by a couple of numbers, which i think might be the flight number.

Shouldn't be a problem if it is not too bad. Sure even people without stutters sometimes make a balls of the radio. I found it daunting at first, but so cool when you get the hang of it. I wouldnt be worrying about it at all, the ATC will no that you are training and are usually very helpful and patient! If you plan on training in a school which is in, or close to a Control area or zone you will get plenty of experience in working the radio. Best of luck

The radio's only there so you can make a fool of yourself with it. That's what I was told. Once you hit that p/t button....bang...mind goes blank and you become a jabbering idiot!;)

As far as I know, when you are doing your solo flights, your call sign will be "student followed by the aircraft reg".

When you are doing your Flight Test, you are given a call sign that ATC's know is a student pilot doing a flight test.

Yes - when you don't have your PPL you prefix the callsign with Student.

So if you were flying an aircraft with registration EI-BMN your callsign would be "Student Bravo Mike November" (after you've made initial contact which would say the full callsign).

OP- I'd recommend getting yourself setup with Vatsim in Flightsim. You connect to a server and communicate with real people playing the role of ATC. You use the same terminology and it's a great way of learning.

I had absolutely no problems with RT from my first lesson based on my Vatsim experience

Although OP should be aware that real world ATC staff are not 10 year old little Hitlers!;)

    Obviously ;)

The VatEire fellas are on the ball though. They know the sector, how it works in real life and their RT is almost always spot on.

Trying going EIDW-EGLL/EGKK on a Sunday night and you'll be impressed by how close they simulate the real world ops.

You only put the "student" prefix before the aircraft reg for innitial contact with an ATS.... Not for every transmission.

Unless you get into trouble or end up somewhere you shouldn't be! Then you hammer that student callsign home all day!:D

Don't worry about it, the first couple of lessons you have your instructor will handle the radios (usually anyway), so you can learn the ropes from him/her.

ATC are tolerant of you partly as they know you're new and mostly because it is in their interest to clarify things with you on the radio so you dont end up over over Collinstown....

A private pilot yes.....you may wish to clarify that if you tell people...though maybe not...the less said and all that.

Download a copy of the CAA Radiotelephony Pdf

That should help you, it certainly helped me.

Or the simple advise I was given when doing the ELP for Radio.

Who you are, Where you are and What you want!!!!!

Can I suggest doing some backseating during your training, as in sit in the back on someone else's lesson. That way you can concentrate on listening to all the RT from every aircraft on frequency without having to worry about flying the plane too - it's much better than any simulation.

Personally, I'd recommend it for all of your training aswell, do as much backseating as you can as it's basically free lessons minus the pressure of cocking it up
