Ok so I'm in a bit of a dilemma and as I am only out of college a short while Im not very experienced in the working world.

I have been working for a company ( A) for the past 6 months. at first it was 3 months permanent and now it is just covering whenever they need me to do so. However this company ( A) may need me to work full time again in the future. I love working for them.
I now have an interview for another company (B) which I am not too interested in but i need money and it is in a convenient location so am a bit desperate.
I am wondering if it is best to go for job B or not?
    My worries are as follows
    1) If I go for job B and job A wants me to work full time, they may not wait a full month which is the notice I may have to give job B.
    2) If it turns out that I hate job B, can I leave it without notice? What is the worst that can happen a person who leaves a job on the spot without any notice?
    3) Is there any way I can work in job B without telling job A about it? How do p45s work? Will the new employer demand a p45 from my old employer? Is there any way I can give my new employer a p45 without actualy telling my old employer as I would like to stay with the old employer incase I'm not happy in the new job so I can still cover when they need me..
    4) what if a new better job comes up for me in the meantime. do all employers wait a full month??

Don't write off job b. I met my current girlfriend (6 years) in a situation similar to yours... I chose job b.

If you have a good working relationship with Company A, and as you say they have only been giving you work every now and again, I'm sure that there'll be no bad feelings if you were to take another job elsewhere. If Company A likes you and you've done good work for them in the past, they'll wait the month, most companies would in fairness rather than training someone in from scratch.

You won't know whether you'll like the job with Company B unless you take it and give it a reasonable time. There'll be parts of every job that you'll compare to Company A but at the end of the day you're short of money and just out of college so experience is vital.

As for question 3, best to be above board, by all means tell Company A that you'll cover for them, that will go down well with them. But you're going to have to be upfront with Company A that you're going to work for Company B. Company B will need the P45.

If a better job comes up, work out your notice, don't burn bridges.

Best of luck to you SallyAnne

You have a job interview you havent actually been offered the job yet so why are you stressing about something that isnt even an issue at the minute, go for the interview, even just for the experience of it. Just because you go doesnt mean you will get it, and if they do actually offer you the job then is the time to weigh up the pros and cons of it, if they ring you then all you have to do is say is thank you for the offer you will get back to them in the morning, no big deal.

Stop jumping the gun and chill, go for the interview you never know after it you may actually decided that it is for you or you may decide that you dont want to work there, even before they get back to you.

thank you for the replies so far.

lets say you go for a job and end up hating it and leaving or if you cannot give sufficient notice for some reason and you simply walk out, is there any way you can hide that job from your cv? is there another way to give a new employer your p45 other than from the job you left?? can you get a p45 any other way to avoid them knowing you worked for the company you left?

finally, if you leave a job without giving even a days notice, could you ask the job you had before that one to issue you with another p45 for your next employer saying "you lost it the first time" (that way you could leave the job you left out of your cv so they could not possibly give you a bad reference)??

Of course you can just walk out its your life you can do what you want with it, but dont expect to get a reference if you do but if you didnt like it then who cares about a reference, sanity is much more important.... as for your P45 this is a legal document that is owned by the revenue commissioners and issued to you upon termination of employment only one is issued per employment and you can not get a second one from that employment for the same time period....If you do walk out and dont get a P45 and then start a new job its no big deal just tell your new employer you dont have one, the payrole dep will ring the revenue to register you and no the revenue will not tell them your last role just in case you lied about it, they do give your tax credits, standard cut of rate and how much tax and prsi you have paid to date only to your new employer

I worked in payroll and one thing I will say to you is this, on your first day of your new job do not hand in your P45, most employers pay monthly which normally means at the end of the month so you do have a bit of time to hand in your P45 that is unless you start in the last two weeks of the month, this gives you a chance to scope out the place and see if its for you, but dont be hasty most places take at least three months to settle into....if you dont give it in, the payroll dep just ring the revenue and ask, they have to ring anyway to register you so is no big deal to get your details from them, and your last employer whether you left on good or bad terms or even if you got a P45 or not have to supply your P45 details to the revenue regardless of if you get a copy so they will know either way your details as per your last job.

Op stop stressing about this "new" job its only an interview, there are plenty of people out there looking for work and I am sure there are lots going for this job with more experience than you, Im not putting a dampener on it just being realistic, as your stressing about a decision whether to take the job or not when you havent even been offered the job, so stop go for the interview as experience and if you are offered it then as I already said weight up the pros and cons, this is your life you make your decisions but dont hold out for the job that you are in now to offer your more work or even full time work as it may never materialise.

best of luck with it all Op
