I'm with Sky at the moment paying €120 a month ( i have every channel bar porno ones:D) but i was looking at UPC website earlier and they can do more or less the same package for €30 less a month.
Now i don't mind paying the €120 as it keeps me outta the pub  but the prospect of paying €30 less does kinda appeal to me.
What would the main differences be between the 2.
I must add that i have never had a single problem in the 4 or so years i've had Sky.

Well I went the other way from UPC HD to Sky + HD and no way would I go back. But each to their own. How are you paying that much though, have you got multi room?

Wow that's a lot of money, but if you can afford it, fair play.

I've had both in the past - now with saorview and fta systems instead for various reasons including financial.

I really never warmed to UPC tv, I found their boxes and the accompanying software to be painfully slow and fidgety in comparison to sky, so much so that if I was going to be paying for tv I would go with sky for that reason.

Not sure if speed and general user friendliness of the system is worth an extra €30 a month though. For me other than that the major advantage of sky was sky go and general interactive services. In terms of channels I didn't find a huge difference, perhaps sky had some extra ones though.

€30 a month would by you two 20-bottle boxes of Miller/Bud when they're on special... per month....

You must be top of BskyB's christmas card list :D. We pay about €30 a month, the same as the vast majority of people I would say... you equal about 4 normal sky customers subscriptions ..... Faird used.

Think it might be a little more than €30 / month. The Sports and Movies pack alone from UPC is €44 on TOP of the €30ish. HD is another €5/month.

Things to consider. Sky Sports Channels on UPC do not currently come in HD. Talk of that changing, but not yet.

Also who do you have your telephone / internet with. UPC internet is excellent. I have Sky downstairs on 2 tv's and then upstairs in a bedroom have a UPC connection as part of their tv/phone/bundle. Got it mainly for their internet which is 25MG. Compared with the maximum speed I could get of only 1.3MG due to the old copper wire through traditional sources this is fantastic.

I don't have a house phone and use the 3 dongle thingy for the internet.

We are in a similar dilemma at the moment, the missus' rich family are with UPC and paying about 120 a month. They have a HD box in one room, standard boxes in 2 more, have two phones, and very fast broadband + movies. The main (and I would say only) advantage for us is 100mb broadband that noone else can do. I don't think sky even do broadband in Ireland do they? We've never had an issue with it, and it's amazingly fast and not too expensive.

The UPC boxes are slow, we've had umpteen problems where they don't record stuff (literally had 6 different boxes swapped and tests done, we are good friends with the UPC engineer now ).
    UPC don't have Sky Atlantic.
They don't have some of the extra sky features, like Sky Go to watch on your phone, or access from a games console/pc.

They want to move to sky and back to eircom because they reckon it'll be cheaper, don't care for the broadband speed, and have had too many problems like phones breaking/boxes not working.

Just looking at it there the prices for us are very similar, 40-55 for eircom, 53 movie pack + 30 multiroom

UPC broadband is a real clincher for them. I'm sure if the BB was not available, thousands of customers would just drop them and go the FTA sat / saorview route. As it stands though, their broadband cannot be touched by any other supplier, so they're laughin'

You should try cancelling Sky to see if they give you a reduction in your bill.

I actually rang them this morning and they said the best they could do is give me 20% off the channels package for 6 months which works out at a saving of about €15 a month. Better than nothing i suppose. :)

Good timing this thread is here as I've been onto Sky this morning as well.

Thinking of going from UPC to Sky because of a couple of things UPC don't provide because of where I live! (Greystones)

I've been paying for Fibre Ultimate package which is everything tv(Max+)/phone(Freetime 100 world)/broadband(50MB)
I also have one multi-room box setup.

What I don't have from this pack:

    50MB broadband speed - max is 25MB
No remote record - the set-top boxes are sh1t! My iphone wont pick them up.
and now with the new on-demand feature I can't get this also! :(
The on-demand is very good as I've been to family members houses and it makes me jealous! The on-demand was the final straw thou and so I rang them to tell them all this - currently I pay €82 for all this - got thru to loyalty team and they understood the problems blah blah blah....
They will now give me the same package for €69.81 with 2 months free and 2 months free Sky Sports\Movies.

I then rang Sky this morning and they offered me (for TV only)

43 per month sky entertainment extra + €10 extra for HD (For 2 set top boxes)
As above but with sports pack(which I don't have from UPC) €77 + €10 extra for HD

For 2 set top boxes I have a couple of options:
1 Sky+ hd and a standard box (with no HD or record) - FREE
1 Sky+ hd free and for second box €199

    Couple of points\questions:

Sky has Sky Go which is great - I assume I can view Sky sports etc... on my mobile\ipad?
Is there remote record with Sky for iphone?
Also, is there an on-demand type service from Sky or is it just record on the set top box?
I do prefer the interface Sky has and the interactive features - especially the multi-screens(red button) to select individual matches when there on.

I know most of us have HD TVs for quite a few years now and while you pay a little extra for it - Sky has it. UPC doesn't for my area anyway...

i left sky last month as i was moving, within three weeks i had a letter offering me a welcome back offer, any package half price for 12 months, so i rang them up and asked them to combine the fifty euro cashback offer they are doing, hey presto they did it. just thought i would throw it out there if anyone wants to save a few bob, as long as you can put up with fta for three weeks

Sky has Sky Go which is great - I assume I can view Sky sports etc... on my mobile\ipad? You are allowed TWO devices

Is there remote record with Sky for iphone? Yes..and its very good

Also, is there an on-demand type service from Sky or is it just record on the set top box? NO Sky Anytime is available in UK, negotiations ongoing here but not expecting anytime soon.

I do prefer the interface Sky has and the interactive features - especially the multi-screens(red button) to select individual matches when there on - brilliant for some sports ( like the NFL )

I just wanted to mention if you ring and complain about broadband speed the first thing they will do is ask you to connect the computer and the modem with a LAN cable (a small one should've come with the modem). I can almost guarantee if you connect via a LAN cable you will get 25mb speeds. Our 100mb broadband is actually ~110mb connected via cable. If you sit 1 metre away from the modem and connect wirelessly you get about 45mb. Wireless tech is just not good enough yet, especially if it's going through walls/doors

Nah 25MB is the max for this area - UPC know this; they haven't upgraded the fibre in the area to support 50/100MB yet.

You do not have to take the TV with phone and broadband.

yes and it works very well, handy for weddings, christenings, communions etc when matches are on at the same time or when your OH is driving:D

There sure is, you can also remote record from a PC/laptop/android device

Sky have a catch-up service called SKY anytime that is similar to the BBC iplayer or RTE player and is accessible very easily from the OSD. They also have a pay-per-view service called Sky box office for movies or events like boxing

OP once was enough and while it falls between two stools, really you're asking about UPC from the point of view of someone who has Sky. This thread's being closed and you can continue the discussion over on Cable.
