Mazda problem speculation

    Hi folks,

Car going to garage this evening, but I thought I'd describe the symptoms and see what the problem might be.

99 Mazda 323, not been serviced in, em, :oa while.

Started losing power going uphill occasionally about a week ago. The TCS Off light would come on. Car would recover.

Then it progressed to cutting out completely after losing power, this was more likely to happen going up steep, or sudden steep hills. Had to pull over a couple of times to let traffic pass, the try to restart, which at first happened instantly then after a few attempts.

Neither of these issues have yet happened on longer drives, only local driving.

The car has also become hard to start at times, key will turn and it'll try to start but the engine won't take off. This doesn't always happen. It can cut out again if left idle, but not always.

None of these issues happen all of the time.

Mechanic (local rural garage) reckons he'll service the car first, then see how she behaves. But, I may have to go elsewhere to get it plugged in if lights are coming on, TCS Off light.

That's it, let the speculation commence.
