My personel laptop broke.I have no internet access at home and cannot afford to buy a new one yet.

In work, I use a laptop provided by company. I was thinking of sneaking the laptop home for two weeks or so until I buy myself a new one. I know if I ask them, then they would say No as any company would say the same.

My question is, if I get caught out brining laptop home would I get the sack? I wouldnt be able to say it is for work business as they would know well its not so I would tell them honest stroy as mentioned above. Would this cost me my job though? Like a mobile, I cant live without a laptop!!!!

    Cheers!

I think you already know the answer to this question.

    It's no.

You could always ask and clarify it. Then you'll know for sure. Probably not worth losing your job over.

Could you use an internet cafe for a couple of weeks?

I can't believe you even bothered to ask the question! Most companies do not allow personal use of PC's. I would've thought the reasons why would be obvious...

If you need to access the 'net. can't you borrow a friend's PC for a few minutes a week, until you get sorted? Or another idea would be to use your moby to check messages.

Is whatever you're doing on your laptop worth risking your job?

    There's your answer.

OK, Cheers for heads up. Didnt think it was a big deal but from these reactions it doesnt look like its worth it.

Ill just suffer for two weeks so.

Gross misconduct, misappropriation of company property, possibly even theft spring to mind. That would be a sackable offence IMO

I thought you wanted to start doing some work from home? That article you wanted to write to help other staff do X and Y which only you know how to do...

Massive deal in this day and age. Especially if the laptop contains confidential info on it.

    Is it really though?

I used to take a laptop home all the time.

I didn't care if they knew or not because I knew they wouldn't fire me because I had too much knowledge and experience.

Perhaps the seriousness depends on your position in the company?

If the company didnt want you to move your computer, you'd have a desktop.

From my own view, I use it to check boards, FB news etc when im on business travel.

As said above.. if your IT department seen what you were looking at it, would it go further thats the best barometer of whether you should use it or not.

I agree. It also depends on your relationship with the IT people. I had a good relationship with them...

Delete the server logs or i'll be sacked man please!!!

    :p

But in all seriousness, in one of my previous companies when i was away for work I used to look up military books, hardware etc and websense kept blocking it for "S&M, Violence"

My line managers manager called me up about it, pretty serious meeting with HR etc.

So I google F16 armaments, F22 Raptor thrust vectoring, M249 Saw, WW2 MRLS etc in the room and all were blocked.. I showed them my amazon account.. 100 or so books all military related, they had a word with IT :D

Why not simply ask whether you can or not?

Don't listen to all these scare mongerers on here either.

Ask your line manager is it allowed! No harm done!

The reason for the 'scarmongering' as you put it is because OP originally asked should they 'sneak' the laptop home

if you know your company will say no, and you sneak it home, this could be seen as you 'stealing' company property, or at least misuse of company property. In many companies that is gross misconduct and a sackable offence. No one said, don't ask. We were saying, don't sneak it home. That is not scaremongering, its good advice.
