You can get photos to your iphone /smartphone in realtime from certain types of CCTV cameras. But realistically you would be talking about a €1,000 for a decent CCTV setup.

Seen a video on you tube of an old mobile phone wired up to a door that if the door opens it wud ring your number would not be that hard to do if you were handy just wire it up to a gate or something

i'm involved in security with the last few years, you can view camera feeds live on a smartphone with the likes of ic realtime apps but that would mean havin to be looking at your phone the whole time, a simple but effective system i've pu tin a few places was a light gate sensor across the main farm entrance, that can but off a door bell within the house, the sensors are cheap(15- 30e) and the signal could be carried back to the dwelling house on 4 core alarm cable,(10e for 100m max) and bell 10e.

Ideally should have a gate. If that is not possible a system as described by Dmac above, but wired to a phone so it rings you, an alarm going off in the yard so your visitors know their presence is noticed, and if you are not around then look at live feed on your phone. Saw a DVR where can see live and talk over speaker though your phone. Make sure visitors can see the cameras.
In the process of doing such a system, not expensive (excluding time!) if DIY but not cheap if installed. Reckon worthwhile though way things are going, should last good few years.
