Car cuts out gearing down

My sister's car occasionally cuts out when she's changing from fourth to third gear. It always starts again with no problems but once when it cut out the steering wheel locked and the car drifted across the road. She's had it checked out - twice - but no solution found. She even knows that if she gears down on certain bad bends it'll cut out.

Any advice or suggestions gratfully received.

Hi, what make/model is it and what type/size of engine is it?
Is it idling ok, and never cuts out just idling or runs rough?

Is it only between those two gears?
Have you driven it yourself and do you have the same problem, no problem or a problem with different gears?
If she gently applies a tiny amount of accelerator during the gear change does it help? (don't test on a bend!)
Are you getting any warning lights before the engine cuts?

Mine is doing something similar, when I change gears if I take to long the revs drop and the engine cuts, but it's the same for all gear changes and it's cutting when idling so may be completely unrelated.

As above, more infomation is needed. It could be related to the throttle body, especially if it is a fly-by-wire type, i..e electronically controlled as opposed to by a cable. If it is clogged up or hasnt been adapted to the ECU coectl;y, i.e. after a clan/replacement it could be closing up and effectively choking the engine which may cause it to stall, however this is only speculation...

    Thank you for your responses.

I've never driven her car so I don't know. It's a 7 year old Suzuki jeep - I'm not sure which model but not a Jimny nor a Grand Vitara. She did say a something lights up on the dashboard but she hasn't identified it. It passed its NCT in March.

Followng my badgering she took it back to the garage where she bought it and was told ... she wasn 't driving it enough! She drives it all the time; not long distances certainly but every day at the same time. Incidentally a friend of mine bought a used car with all the bells and whistles but it gave trouble. He literally took it all over the country to try to identify the problem before he was told ... the original driver didn't drive it enough!

What's with this response? My buddy seems to have sorted the problem with his car (slowing, chugging along slowly).

I'm urging my sister to get a new car or a newer car at any rate.

Thanks again. If I ever do get to the bottom this I'll post about it. I appreciate the advice

when it cut out the steering wheel locked and the car drifted across the road

    Sounds dangerous to me.

Does she have a heavy weight like a lot of other keys on the ignition key?
It's like as if its turning off the ignition - well at least it has to turn it off if the wheel locks!

It's unlikely the steering wheel locked when the engine stalled however with no engine running the power steering would not be working, which could make the steering extremely heavy. It's likely to be a relatively simple fault in the fuel system but you might need to get the codes read to identify it. I would get it sorted as it is could be dangerous but I don't think it's sufficient reason to get rid of the car especially if it's otherwise reliable.
