Lets say I choose BESS but at the end of first year I decide I'd rather do Economics and Maths TSM (points are a barrier of doing it directly). Would they be able to accommodate this?

I imagine it would also be based on academic results and available places.

    Thanks for any responses.

You need to have gotten the entry points for the course you are looking to switch into. Unless you're a mature student, they don't take into account your end of year exam results.

Thanks Anita Blow, that clarifies it for me.

You would not have the prerequisites for the 2nd year mathematics courses. Only 1/3 of the first year BESS syllabus is common to the TSM Economics and Mathematics syllabus, and it would not be possible or permissible to take the second year mathematics courses without having done the relevant first year courses at TCD, or the equivalent of those courses at another university.

And if you do not have the points to enter directly into a course, you would not be permitted to transfer into it after one year.

Just to add to this and clarify, if you have the points and places are available, then you should be able to transfer into first year of the TSM Economics & Mathematics course. I had a friend for example who transferred from Single Honors Philosophy to JF Science after his first year.

However, you will be liable for tuition fees since it is considered repeating a year. Source
