    so here's the question

I'm about to invest in a gaming laptop. I've narrowed it down to really the only two options which are alienware m17x r4 and sager/clevo.

Does anyone have any experience with using pc specialist? And has anyone had any version of the vortex laptops before.

For the same specs I can get one off them for about €200 cheaper than the alienware. Trying to judge is it really worth going for the cheaper option or stick with the trusted alienware

Really had my heart set on Alienware but heard good things about Sager and Pc specialist are the only crowd in UK or Ireland to sell the same laptops
Of course they do re name them so in this case its the Vortex 3

I'd recommend going for the Sager/Clevo rebrands over the Alienware. The former has better build quality in general, and also better price. May not be as prettyfull (subjective, personally I find the Alienware laptops horrendous looking) as the non Alienware ones, but they lovely :3

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 994 ✭✭✭carbon nanotube

and you are basing better build quality on actually owning a m17x?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭Dannysaurus

Basing it on comparison on both word of friends and having actually had a hands on experience of both laptops. Mainly between the M14s and the Sager NP6s or the general area where the Clevo W150 is rebranded.

I'd assume similar with the larger ones no?

I own a m17x and can say the build quality is awesome.

I cant fault it. You get what you pay for, sagers have good tech but the build quality of them would be dubious to say the least.

The 17inch Vortex is about €1,800ish the 15inch is about €1,700ish and the M17x R4 is about €1,900ish ha

I could actually get the Alienware with a downgraded HDD without the mSATA caching SSD for €1,802.10

both have the I7-3610 Ivy bridge
    Both have the 7970m
    Clevo has 16gb ram
    Alienware has 12gb

I won't see a difference and would have gone for 12gb for the clevo if offered that choice. Have to do some more research I suppose

Well no need to get butthurt about it >.< Just merely a comparison. Just that in my personal opinion, I favor the Sager/Clevo/MSI rebrands over the Alienware and that my reason would be a better build quality and pricing :3
The Alienware is pretty to some, I'll give it that.

im cool about it, but its pointless making comparisons with stuff without actually owning it.

PC Specialist are cool. No probs with them. Been used by a fair few on here aswell.

That Vortex III--> clevo/sagers name looks to be Clevo P170EM/Sager NP9170 as far as I can see.

Easy to find reviews once you can figure out the proper name.

There are other clevo sellers in Europe 5 others in UK along with PC Specialist, PwnPcs has the 7970 now but when you get to checkout it hits you with £30 for delivery and near £50 charge for using paypal/credit card. Making them uncompetitive. They have a Rep on the site there who offers discounts/deals, may be worth a shot annoying him to see if they'd beat PC Specalist though, never know.

http://www.cyberpowersystem.co.uk/ is worth a look cuz of their customisation options, theirs loads!!!

Wouldn't bother with the foreign ones, prices are much the same as PC Specialist but with the added translation problems. I went through near all of them.

With the money you're spending you should get a proper SSD (Samsung 830, Crucial M4 or Intel 330) not that MSata Cache hybrid addon yoke, they're not great. I found a good review of them, can't find it now. Buy it after or add it as an option now and lower your HDD down to a 500GB if you are pushing you budget limit. Do you really need 16GB RAM? Only need for that would be some kinda drawing program.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭Am I Evil?

Thanks :pac: I'll have to read up on all those

The issue with the Ram is I don't need 16gb I don't think anyone really does haha I do use AutoCAD for college.12gb would be perfect but I only have the option of either 8 or 16 with the vortex

I'd fancy getting a SSD and would definitely drop the HDD to 500gb as you said if I was going to. I'm not too arsed on boot up speeds which seems to be the main positive of SSDs anyway so I decided I'd go for the mSATA cache one. I'll re price it with a downgrade on the HDD and I'll add a proper SSD to see

Not only boot speeds, programs launch faster aswell

Theirs a way better vid where the guy launches like 20 programs one after the other on two machines,:D, aaaah, can't find it now either. HDD is probably still running.:p

You don't really notice an SSD after a couple of uses, you get accustomed to it really quick, but when you have to use some other machine without one then, it's torture.:pac:

It's impressive alright but just not really a big deal to me

How easy is it to buy your own SSD and update at a later point?

    Very.

Read back through this thread and you'll see what they're currently selling for.

Under a hundred for 128GB which is grand size.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 647 ✭✭✭Am I Evil?

With the upgrade price pc specialist seems to give for a 120GB one I may aswel just pay the bit extra and get one now

Now to decide between 15inch or 17inch. I've decided to just go for the clevo. No point in dragging it out anymore. It's cheaper and has better specs. I may prefer the look of the Alienware but oh well

The 17inch im now looking at http://i.imgur.com/ZLkPa.png
For a total of €1,878 or €1,840 with half the ram

Or the 15inch which has exactly the same specs as the 17inch at a price of €1,756

    decisions decisions :pac:

edit , just took another look at the Alienware for € 1,829.10 I can get

    http://i.imgur.com/lyhay.png
So thats 8gb ram with only the 32gb mSATA caching SSD
    or € 1,871.10 for 12gb ram

So really when it comes to it, For 4gb extra ram which obviously makes 0 difference and a 120GB SSD for an extra €7

As near as possible same spec in PC Spceialist means €50 in price dif if using Bank Transfer as payment, €20 if using paypal, SSD comparison-->much the same actually. (Paying by debit in PC Specialist)

I'd stick with PC Specialist. Way less possible hassle for small gain.

You have to tick both boxes at bottom of mysn to get to the next page. Stupid German. vvv

Why how are save on laptops so cheap

    6ZLIE.png

    Thats only €1,602

Surely there must be something iffy about this crowd.. Has anyone ever had experience with them?

If they're good thats my laptop sorted :pac:

Might even up it to a matte screen or a blu ray writer  :pac:

    I found this on box.co.uk http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/674777-box-co-uk-trusted.html

Might have to send them an email to enquire about the warranty too. I've no idea if they ship to ireland but I could just use deliver me. Hopefully that wouldnt **** up anything if I get any issues with the laptop. Will send them one in the morning to see

No, not iffy, they've been a Forum favourite for a good 3/4 years here.

    http://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.box.co.uk
    http://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/www.saveonlaptops.co.uk

^^^Great site for reviews, sometimes the companys respond.:pac:

They're the same company, reviews are generally positive, not great when you have a problem (pawning off to Manufacturer seems common, but that's them in this case so can't do that:pac:) but most companies aren't. Def the one to go for with the savings offered here though. No question.

It's only £10 for delivery to Ireland. I'm surprised theirs not more about them at these prices, unless like me they missed the custom section when clicking in:o as Box have been in the clevo Thread link for a few months at this stage. I see Box, I go to SOL, habit.

Send your e-mail (theirs lots of warranty stuff if you run through to the checkout) and buy buy buy.:D:p

You owe Jarren a aaa a a box of roses.:D

I'll look into it more in the next few days and hopefully it wont be too long more before I make the order. I'll update when I hopefully get it :pac:

    Quick question though :pac:
As this is a laptop I'm obviously not expecting it to play top line games in 5 years time on high settings

But I hear it's pretty simple to upgrade your GPU on a clevo but where and how do i go about buying a new GPU?

As far as I was aware all laptop GPUs are OEM so is Ebay and the expensive prices the only option?

Once the PSU can power the new GPU, has the correct slots and Heatsink, you can get any GPU you want.

Actually looking around, ebay looks like the cheap option.

    I see http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/ mentioned on a few sites....but it's weird to navigate.

Never bought one so don't mind me...
