Windows file compression limitation

I've been trying to compress a 20GB structured file system using the standard compression utility that comes with Windows (7) but it keeps bailing out every time it comes across filenames with a hyphen (-) in them. This often might be a date, e.g. a file named "Results (30-06-12).xls" and there are just too many to alter, but I wouldn't wont to do that anyway. I've tried 7-zip and that has no quibbles with file names. Is there much difference between the two? I won't be touching the files for years and need to be sure that I will be able to view them in years to come. If anyone has a recommendation for an alternative compression program (winrar, winzip etc.), please shout, so long as it is free!

    Thanks!

Stick with 7zip. It's free and better than the built-in compression.
