    Hi

I finished first year arts in UCD this year and I am just wondering if anyone knows whether it would be possible to transfer to NUIG 2nd year arts.

Money is the main factor in my asking. If anyone has any information about this I would appreciate it greatly.

Originally posted this in the NUIG forum but was advised to ask here. Have found a little bit more information but if anyone that has gone through this before could add more would really appreciate it. Have already contacted the college asking but have yet to hear back. Website is a little vague.

    Thanks for replies in advance!

Looks like it is possible but you should ring admissions in NUIG rather than email.
    Basic Info here http://www.nuigalway.ie/admissions/transfer/
There is a transfer form here but the Application needs to be in by the 13th July. There are some regulations for Arts here.

Thank you, yeah as far as I can see it seems possible have rang once but didn't get through unfortunately. Just do not want to go through the application process to be told I have to pay the college 7 grand!
Have looked at the application form over the last few days and have it pretty much sorted however for the character reference I'm at a bit of a crossroads!

I could ask my career guidance teacher from school, or my English teacher or my Italian tutor from college. These are three people who I know would write me an excellent character reference but I think three may be overkill!

Why would you have to pay the college 7 grand? Get a reference from someone in UCD who can comment on your ability to do the work at a college standard.

Whatever the fees are I mean.

If its a transfer and you get free fees I'd say you'd just have to pay the student contribution and levy (or less if you get a grant). Starting a new course would probably be a different matter.

Also, get speaking to whoever is going to give you the reference. Your cutting it fine with the time.

Thanks I was pretty sure that was the story but just wanted to double check!
I know I'm behind but up until a few days ago I wasn't even aware this was possible.

The only part I'm worried about is my personal statement. My main reason for transferring is financial but I'm worried about mentioning that as its far more important to me that I get my degree, First year was far too stressful with having money problems. Ideally I would just love an interview to show them how passionate I am about my course and how determined I am to get my degree.

Wouldn't worry too much about that. You've already proven you can complete a year in arts which is the usual worry for them.

There is actually one worry I have. In the first semester I failed one module, result was based on one 100 per cent exam which to be completely honest for me was very overwhelming as a first year, (not one out of my chosen subjects I wish to continue with to 2nd Year) In UCD as I finished the year with 55 credits I was eligible to continue into 2nd Year provided I either take the module again later on in my degree or substitute it with a different module of my choice. Because at the time I really could not afford to pay the repeat fee I choose to do that but I am afraid that NUIG will not consider my application because of this.

Btw I am sorry to be bombarding you with questions!

That's probably up to NUIG how they want to proceed with it. Might let you take an extra module to cover the credits but they would probably charge you for it. I'd suggest you worry about it later. See if you can get in before you get wrapped up in anything else. If you do have to pay for another module, you'll probably manage through what you would save in Dublin rents.

Thanks you for all your help!

Yeah I wouldn't paying for an extra module if I transfer I will save myself thousands.

Is it worth noting in my personal statement why I didn't repeat?

Don't mention it unless they ask for it. Just express your reasons for changing and what you hope to achieve/do while in Galway. Take a look at what they offer as post grad stuff and mention how you might wish to continue to a masters. Doesn't have to be true but a student willing to continue is cash in the bank.

    G'luck with it.
