    Hi guys,

I've €20,000 to spend looking really for a 911 or a boxster. Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Well, you've enough for 4 Boxster's or 2 911's - so what's the question ?

If I was you, i'd stay away from the Boxster....but that's because i'm not the biggest fan of the soft tops.

However, close enough to your budget is. Which I think looks pretty good, or how about a Nissan 350z / 370z?

Going to be hard to get insured on a Porsche as a 22 yr old male.

But then what did you buy last time you opened a thread when you had 10K and 22K to spend?

Didn't buy anything in the end, its just I've heard boxsters can be troublesome.
So was wondering what's the best buy for my budget, not wanting the newest in my budget but the most reliable desirable Porsche for my budget.

Why are you still considering one then?

I used the words "can be" losely, I don't know enough about them & I was still considering them in case a knowledgable person knew if their was a good year/model.

If you can afford the 911 get one because if you bought the boxster you'd only be wishing you bought the 911. I myself looked into buying a porker myself a few years back and had the same feeling after driving a few boxsters so decided to test drive a 911 and my god there is such a difference and I was glad I held out, I was even more glad a few weeks later when I lost my job and hadn't bought either :)

my advice if you are buying one is if you really like the 911 and are just settling for the boxster.....buy a decent 911 or buy the Nissan 350z, ooodles of go, can be got a lot cheaper and will always put a smile on your face.

You can buy plenty of good boxsters but a good 911 would be a bit more hard to find. You could get a 10-20yr old one but the more recent 998s and 997s will be hard to find. You should be able to get a 996 though.

If you like convertible roadsters the Boxster is still a really nice car and you can just about get a good 987 for under 20k... Its a bit low on tax than the 911 too...

Here's a 911, a bit over your budget but the guy says he replaced the engine so should be pretty good underneath:

Or you could get this nice looking Boxster: http://www.carzone.ie/search/Porsche/Boxster/2.7Lt-2-/7013385473185810/advert?channel=CARS

Ehhhh..... I'd ring your broker in the morning and sort out the price for an insurance premium first, once you have this you'll have a better idea where you stand financially.

On top of this, you should remember it's one thing to buy a Porsche, it's another thing to be able to afford to run one. Check out prices for servicing, prices of tyres, rate of tyre wear on a 911 etc etc and then have another think about it. You might be better posting this in a UK or other Porsche owners site and get an idea of what the car will cost you over 1-3 years.

I've had two 911's in the past, very desirable robust cars but don't underestimate the running costs, you may be better off with a good reliable older sub-€10,000 Boxster for starters.

    Thanks.

In today's market you can get three or even four early Boxsters with your €20k! You could, of course, spend €20k on a more recent one, but you will lose out on depreciation - these are not rare cars, there is no reason to believe newer Boxsters will not suffer similar depreciation rates to the Mk1 models - 911's are not exactly rare either, but comparatively, they are, and will hold their value better. The Boxster is in a sense a victim of its own success.

996 era 911's are also really good value at the moment. Seemingly, the purists don't like them because of boring styling and water-cooled engines, but, to me, it's a lot of car for the money.

But, if you really feel the need to get rid of the €20k that is burning a hole in your wallet, I would go for something like this 993-era 911:

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Porsche/911/993-C-2-/201209207120996/advert?channel=CARS

Alternatively, spend 15k or so on one of these, and leave the rest for servicing, parts, etc:

I'd personally seek out a nice 928 or 968, but I'm a bit odd like that. here is just one currently on carzone, and three 928's, all of which look a bit to me.

Any Porsche will cost €2k - €4k a year, excluding insurance and depreciation, to keep in good mechanical working order, BTW. Something to bear in mind. But, in my lifetime, there has never been a better time to buy a second hand Porker - good luck with it.
