I booked a flight for 2 of us to JFK in August with Aerlingus couple of months ago. I'm still going but the other person unfortunately can't come...

Is the money lost with Aerlingus or do they refund longhaul flights?

I think it depends on the type of ticket you booked... with the more expensive tickets I think you can get a refund, but I don't know anyone who books these. They wouldn't automatically refund you just because it's a longhaul flight (best to ring them to confirm this though!)

If you can find someone else to go with you though you could change the name on the ticket for a fee.

Most likely (unless you've booked one of the more expensive flexible fares) you won't be able to cancel it - doesn't matter if the flight is long or short haul. You can claim a refund of the taxes/charges however (minus an admin fee)

yes the person can claim back their taxes which is usually a good amount on USA flights. They do charge a fee but he/she should get the balance paid back onto the card they paid with. Good luck!

You could probably sell them, try adverts or dondeal.
There is one for sale on donedeal at the moment, looking for €500. You might be able to get most of your money back this way.
