Epson Stylus SX425W - Problem with print cartridge

I was ordering replacement ink online and the price of original Epson cartridges was about three times the price of generic cartridges, so I ordered the latter.

My cyan cartridge has run out so I installed the replacement cartridge and now the printer is refusing to print anything. I get an error message saying that it doe snot recognise the print cartridge. I tried replacing the old cyan cartridge and just printing black and white, but it now seems to be sulking and won't let me do that.

Is there any way around this or am I just stuck with paying through the nose for original Epson cartridges?

Epsons can be funny (its intentional) with re-manufactured cartridges. Try taking the new one out when it "cannot recognize ink", rub the chip lightly, and also blow into the printer where the chip reader is located. Replace the ink, then power off the machine. When off pull the plug out then plug in and turn back on again after a few minutes, see if it recognises the ink then. If you have 3 other original inks in and only one compatible try replacing all the original inks (just cover the hole at the top and bottom with tape so you can use them again)

    Thanks yoyo

I tried that and unfortunately it didn't work. It looks as it the printer is programmed not to accept non Epson cartridges.

Are they allowed to do this? I would have thought it was anti competitive.

And if they are allowed to do it, why are other manufacturers selling cartridges that they claim are compatible?

It makes me feel as if I'm being ripped off twice.

Where did you buy the inks? Also does it say on the cartridge package that your printer is supported? Just because its the same "Epson ink" cartridge code does not mean the newer printers support the compatibles. Also it could be just a dud cartridge, it can happen.
Regarding are they allowed to stop non genuine cartridges, they arn't, hence the message doesn't say put an original cart in instead ;) But theres nothing stopping them making it harder to get compatibles going (in saying that even Epson originals are very prone to clogging, particularly durabrite ones but thats a rant for another thread...)

    Hi Nick

I bought the cartridges from 7dayshop.com. I've bought stuff from them previously and never had any problems.

Should I try contacting them to see if they can help? In addition to buying a cyan cartridge, I also bought a full set and an additional black cartridge.

    Thanks

Might not be applicable to you, but some of the older Epson compatible carts had a reset contact - you had to touch it and one of the other pins with a paperclip to 'reset' the inklevels on the chip. No idea how they worked or why they couldn't come 'reset' - but one day I spent about two hours trying to get a printer to work for my ma before I tried this.... and it worked. We also had one that you didn't bridge contacts on but had a tiny separate reset button.

Most newer compatibles that are refillable have auto-resets that negate the need for this, but if it were me I'd probably try seeing if there was a reset on the cartridge at this stage. I'm sure there's probably instructions on the net somewhere

I would try the full set, see how you get on, could be a dud cartridge in that case let 7dayshop know about it. Did the cartridges you baught specifically mention your printer? There are different generations of compatible inks, even though the same number there are different revisions

Hi. I bought generic cartridges from Tesco recently for this model. No problems with them and 1/3 the price of original.

Now my scanner wont work! Last time I tried to scan something, I had no problem. This time, it's giving me the options of scanning to a USB key or scanning to my PC. There doesn't appear to be a USB port on the printer (unless it's very well hidden) and it tells me there's a communication error with my PC. I checked the network settings and it tells me that they're OK, so I've run out of ideas?

    Any suggestions?

Can you do a photocopy on the printer, to rule out the scanner hardware being the issue?

Thanks for the suggestion Nick. I've tried that just now and the copier is working. The printer is also working (I've just tested it) so the wireless connection from the PC to the printer is still OK.

The black ink is currently running low, but I don't see how this could have anything to do with the problem as the printer and photocopier are both still working and you don't need ink to scan something.
