Make sure to run a virus/malware scan. Usually these passwords are ones which have been phished (i.e: you were presented with a fake login screen and "gave" them your password) or a keylogger installed on a machine you logged in on (not neccesarily your own) but worth checking out to be safe. Changing your pasword should help in the meantime run a Eset Online Scan and MBAM Free scans

Are there extra methods of protecting your accounts? Gmail has a feature of adding a mobile activation to signing in.

Also be sure to make your password as convoluted as possible. That is make sure it's not a word in the English dictionary and contains special characters (like @, _, !, etc).

Your email password should never be used for anything alse. Also, drop yahoo and enable two step verification on gmail.

You should also now change your "alternate" email addresses used to help recover lost passwords for thos email accounts and also change your security questions on these accounts as it's possible to re hack in if you haven't changed these.

Most email hacks are because the same password was used to create a account on a site that was hacked. And for every hack your hear, there are so much more that you never do.

Always have a unique password for your email above all else.

Thanks for all the help guys. I have Norton on my PC and I update and run often thought that would be enough.

Thats true, Google 2 step verification is a good extra layer of security as well. Most sites that get hacked do have sha/md5/salted passwords, making cracking that bit harder (although md5 has recently enough been found to be quite weak),

What browser are you using ? It would be a good idea to use HTTPS whenever you are logging into any sites, will help reduce against attacks.

That cartoon basically says the fancy passwords with numbers and symbols are not that difficult to break. And those ones are harder to remember too as they are random letters and number and don't make any language sense.

The difficulty level of a password depends on the length of it so if you set your password as four words you can easily remember, because of the length of the password, it becomes very difficult for a password busting program to figure out all the different combinations till it reaches one the right one.

Nowadays email hacking is become common if you think your email is hacked then i suggest to make a new email id that is the best option.

A good tip I found for creating a strong password is as follows. It's basically instead of remembering a series of letters and numbers... start to remember a way to compose your password

So what you could do is take your existing password eg. password7 and push it into a process to create a new password.

    yahoo:email:password7:31121984:tony

    this would translate to:

    facebook:socialmedia:password7:31121984:tony
    gmail:email:password7:31121984:tony

    service:servicetype:password:dateofbirth:firstname

You can use any sort of permutation as long as its different for each service
