Hi all, I have a 00 opel astra going for NCT in the morning and it developed a fault yesterday evening

Basically when the windscreen wipes are on then switched off they come to rest in an upright position, instead of returning horizontal on the base of the glass.

Can anyone tell me (a) the cause, and repair (b) if this will cause it to fail the NCT

    Thanks

Yes this will fail. You need a mechanic to look at the relay switch.
I don't know cost, mechanic will diagnose it first.

Does it work normally on any settings?

No. I can put in on the fastest setting and quickly knock it off to have the wipers rest horizontal but it won't work by itself.

It could be dirty switch contacts so if you're handy around cars try cleaning them.
Otherwise get a mechanic to replace it.

Or someone else might have another suggestion.

They mightened even look at the wipers. I worked in a garage for a period and we used to see cars come in with fail sheets that had so many problems that weren't noticed. Even really obvious stuff, like the spare under the car was just a tyre, no rim.

    Its a lottery

Let them come to rest in the vertical position, turn off electrics, remove wiper arms and refit in the normal rest position.

It's the park sensor in the wiper motor
You can probably open it up and fix it but id just ring Traynors in the north and get on sent down cost about 20 pounds

No because the linkage will break the first time you turn on the wipers

The linkage decides mechanically the wipers change direction

The electrics decide electronically when the motor stops moving the linkage

Quick update.. Once the wipers work at all, its final position is irrelevant and won't constitute a fail.

Unfortunately for me, damaged rear coil springs DO mean a fail and a retest :(

Thanks all for the advice and I plan to replace the sensor along with the other work needs doing.

Mad, my GF failed on this very thing so I looked it up in the manual
    http://www.nct.ie/pdf/NCT%20Manual%20Revise%20May%202012.pdf

I think the bit they failed her on for this was
"Speed of Wipers Not operating normally."

Must depend on the tester on the day. Its still annoying though, I'll be getting it fixed for the sake of my own sanity.
