Hi Hope i am posting this in the right forum.

I got a new laptop about 6 weeks ago and all was fine with internet speed etc for a few weeks. Over the last few weeks i have noticed that the internet speed is way down and have spent about 2 frustrating hours on the phone to eircom today trying to sort out the problem.

Eircom are telling me i have too many programmes running in the background so i was wondering how i can disable these or have them run just once a week to check for updates rather than constantly running?
Thanks in advance for any help and much appreciated.

Don't disable something if you're not sure what it does. Check first or ask back here.

Or you could reinstall windows only, the machine you bought will have lots of programs on it you'll never use, link above is just windows, good idea to download any drivers that may be on the manufacturers site for the laptop you have before you do it just incase windows update doesn't or can't find one.

All of this will make your machine faster, it won't make your internet faster. Well, maybe abit, if lots of stuff goes looking for updates at same time.

Autoruns is another great tool for controlling startup programs.
