What does your itunes folder look like?

I don't think I've ever edited anything inside this folder but I refuse to believe it is this messy by default:

There are albums and music files scattered everywhere in there. There are 4 'music' folders (inc. sub folders).

I only drag ever albums directly into itunes so it can file the albums itself.

The urge to clean it up aches me, but I dont want to deal with all the errors when I open I tunes.

Looks fine to me. iTunes has an option in preferences to keep your files and library organised for you.

My whole library is actually stored in /Music rather than in /Music/iTunes/iTunes Music. I set it that way years ago (when I cared about stuff like that) and it has somehow survived multiple backups and restores. Although I never really look in there anymore as I manage everything through iTunes.

You've obviously messed with your library as you have an iTunes inside your iTunes folder.
Might be no harm in doing something like SF did and set your media folder to a different location, and then consolidate your library so it all gets copied to there, then you could clean the iTunes, iTunes music, iTunes media and mobile applications folders inside your iTunes folder.
