Commuting from Blackrock to Glasnevin

    Hi all,

I live in Blackrock and currently work in Sandyford but have now been offered a job near Tolka Valley Park, Glasnevin, Dublin 9.

I would like to know if anyone does this or a similar commute and if so how long it takes you in rush hour traffic. I could start as early as 08:30 and finish at 17:00 or start at 09:30 and finish at 18:00.

I'm assuming that driving would be better than public transport.

    Thanks for any feedback.

    W.

The 4 goes straight from Blackrock to Glasnevin and is pretty regular.

I am assuming this is in Dublin Industrial Estate?

Then using public transport you will have to change once.

Your options using public transport are:
    1) 4 or 7 to Parnell Square and then 40,40b, 40d or 140 to Finglas Road
    2) 4 or 7 to Parnell Square and then 120 to Carnlough Road
    3) DART to Connolly and Maynooth Line service to Broombridge

Whichever of the options is best will depend upon which end of the estate your location is. If it is at the west end then options 2 and 3 would be better. If it's at the eastern end then the first option would be better.

It may also depend on where in Blackrock. If you are near the station, then DART then bus might be a good option.

If you dont need your car for work would you consider cycling. It sounds a long way but is less than 8 miles..It wont take you more than about 40 minutes..

    Rock road/merrion road/Beckett bridge/north circular/whitworth road/finglas road...

Cycling would be a good option.

If you do end up taking two buses, then you should at least use T90 tickets, if not monthly, yearly tektites, etc.

A T90 ticket allows you to take as many buses as you need in a 90 minute period, no need to buy two bus tickets.

Taking two buses is probably cheaper then the DART + bus, even though it might be quicker, so worth weighting that up [1]

You can easily see and asses your options here:
    http://hittheroad.ie/#from=Blackrock&to=Tolka+Valley+Business+Park

Adjust the marker positions for exactly where you are going to and from to see the best options [2]

[1] Yes it sucks that even though they have the same parent company and are owned by the government, ticketing between the two is so awful and people are generally better off taking the bus.

[2] I also checked the new NTA journey planner, it also gives similar results, but firstly you can't link to it and secondly it really is much harder to see the overview of the options available due to the crappy user interface on the new journey planner. Hittheroad is again much superior.

    Second cycling.

Another possable option is rail: Blackrock to Broombridge, switching trains at a central station.
