    hi all,
Just wondering if there is much of a difference in the two. I missed out on a 05 s4 a couple a months ago and now I'm starting to consider an rs4. If anyone here has driven both, any input would be greatly appreciated. Cheers lads.

I have driven both. While superficially similar as you would expect from 2 cars based on the same platform in reality the RS4 is on another level as an overall package.

However, it is also on another level when it comes to maintenance and repair costs. When you take the obvious tax, insurance and fuel costs out of it an S4 is actually pretty cheap to run. It is a normal run of the mill mass produced car and as such is much closer to an ordinary A4 than an RS4. This means parts prices for things like brakes and suspension are pretty sensible on the whole. Contrast this to the hand built more specialist RS4 where brakes and shock absorbers are mega money.

So my advice is do your homework before you buy and have your budget for running the car worked out in advance. An S4 is merely expensive to run. An RS4 can be horrifically expensive.

Unless you are looking at the new gen supercharged S4, then focus on the RS4. Its considerably more "purpose built" than that generation S4.
