Why no BBC +1 channels?

Looking at the TV listings for freesat tonight and it would have been handy if BBC had +1 channels like ITV and C4.

Why don't the BBC provide +1 channels? Is it solely down to cost?

Probably down to purely financial reasons as they don't have the benefit of advertising as ITV do for example.

A lot of their programmes are repeated on the BBC2, 3 and 4 channels.

On Freeview, the BBC do not have the space to add +1 channels.

The BBC is required to try to be "Platform Neutral", so it should try to provide the same service on Freeview, Freesat, Sky and Cable.

Since they don't have space for +1s on Freeview, they can't have them on Satellite or Cable either. If they did, they would be short changing the license payers with Freeview.

When you consider all the regional variations of BBC1 and 2, that would be an awful lot of extra costs to run.

How did we ever stay alive without +1 channels, PVRs and multitudes of channels and repeats, life must have been really terrible in the old days.......
