it sounds simple but it has me stumped. I ruled out the usb stick cos it works perfectly in a laptop but when i go to copy files onto a usb stick with my desktop computer it gives me errors. i can copy small files perfectly but when i go to copy an avi like 700mb it gives me errors and disconnects the usb device.

its not a windows problem cos i am dual booting and the same thing happens in linux which leads me to believe its hardware but could be driver related i suppose.

its strange too because i copied a 100mb file ok but when i select a few 100mb files it fails on the third one and with a 700mb avi its fails at about 300mb which is telling me something. either the time is the same or the amount of data is playing some part in this. could it be losing power after a set period of time?

tried different ports on the back and front

oh and i can copy an avi from the usb device to the desktop computer and it copies fine with teracopy but when i try putting it back it wont.

i am guessing it is a motherboard problem or a setting to do with the power supplied to the usb ports. its like the power is being disconnected after a set amount of time copying or something. i tried resetting the cmos and didn't help.

    hope someone can help

How much memory does it have? And how much is free?

I have never heard of something like this happening so I am interested to know what is causing it

What make is the USB key, and also where did you buy it? Some USB keys are fake (be particularly warey about ones on ebay) and while reportedly may say 16gb for e.g may only have 8gb flash memory available, maybe less/more its hard to know.
