PC Dashboard?

Wondering if anyone can recommend some platform that acts as a dashboard that the PC boots into instead of the conventional Windows. I mainly use the PC for gaming, music, movies etc - any work that needs to be done is done on a seperate computer downstairs. This one is mainly for entertainment and I'd like to turn it into some kind of home entertainment system.

I tried XBMC but I'm not very good with technical stuff so I found it difficult to "load" things into it. Is there any others?! Any advice?

here are some alternatives like Boxee, XBMC is probably the best option though

Ok, I'll stick with XBMC for now and try to wrap my head around it.

Do you know of any hardware that is needed to set it up? Or is it merely a app download? I downloaded it but I've seen some talk of people buying hardware etc to run alongside it - it all sounds a bit complicated.

You could install Ubuntu Linux as a dual boot with Windows. Then follow this guide to configure XBMC to start up automatically with Ubuntu (so it will seem like a media center os)
