buggered hard disk?

so I got an ssd a week or two ago, all going great, love it etc etc

but yesterday I couldn't get into windows, just hung on the flashing windows logo
tried safe mode, it hung on classpnp.sys which from googling is something hd related?

got back into windows eventually anyway, had to rename classpnp.sys to classpnp.old , windows appears to have fixed the problem anbyway as it renamed itself back to classpnp.sys somehow and classpnp.old is nowhere to be found

after I got back into windows I was copying stuff from the ssd to free up space and i started getting i/o errors.. i was worried initially that it was the ssd buggering up but now I dont think so
I have the ssd and 3 ordinary sata drives
copying to e: is fine, good speeds. same as f:. no i/o errors
copying to d: though.. just now it started off at 60m/s or there abouts copying my steamapps folder, so I thought.. yay it's all better.. but then all of a sudden the speed just dropped to 3m/s.. now it's hanging around 8m/s and it's not increasing. no i/o errors yet today but that terrible copying speed is worrying me, it's not healthy..right?

I ran chkdsk /f /r (or whatever the command is) yesterday and no errors reported, no bad sectors, no nothing but the hd is still underperforming.. and while I haven't seen any i/o errors yet today... to be honest I'm expecting them

is it possible for a hd to be ****ed but a full chkdsk scan wont see any problems?
I downloaded smartctrl too yesterday and did smartctl -h i think it was, all my drives passed although they all passed almost instantly so I dont know if I did it right, or if there's a command to do a more thorough test.

the d: drive used to be my old Os drive so i guess maybe it took more punishment than my other drives, but I don't think it's any older than two years.

    --edit
    yeah, still getting i/o errors

Smart means nothing, many drives that fail don't trip smart. I would use a low level diag tool like Vivard (can be used off the UBCD). This will show if there are issues (which is likely) with the drive. Chkdsk isn't a proper diagnostic tool (I dont think it checks sector by sector, could be wrong however)

have you got the latest firmware installed on the ssd?

yeah, checked after I installed windows

99% sure it's not the ssd, it's the sata d: drive. just confused as to why every check I perform on it reports that it's all hunky dory but it's underperforming so badly

ah kay, sry i thought it was the ssd that was causing you the trouble, have you got a spare sata cable around you could try?

    not at the moment

i have unplugged the drive for now, ill go back to it ina couple of weeks and get some fresh cables to play with

unfortunately removing the drive seems to have ****ed something up with my bios, but I made a seperate thread for that :)

just read that.. seems like you got it sorted, things can get a bit screwy when changing parts around sometimes you need to cold boot for settings to stick. if it happens again i'd make sure the ssd is installed as dev0 on sata1 port. i would also check disk management and make sure the SSD is marked as the active partition.. you may have more than one active disk which could be causing problems, to mark a partition as inactive follow these steps. if the SSD is not marked as the active disk you can just right click and make it active.

this may be a long shot, but if you plug in the problematic sata drive again at some point, try opening device manager and uninstall it from there, reboot and let it reinstall.. or failing that moving it to another port. sometimes drives just don't like being installed on a certain port for no apparent reason!

amd sata drivers can cause problems in some situations too but i don't know if you have a motherboard with an amd chipset.. i've had to revert my sata controller drivers to microsofts proprietary drivers in the past because i had problems with disk i/o (mainly one of my drives would freeze) .. worth bearing in mind anyway.

    thanks for the tips

what I might do is unplug all the sata drives, reboot and then plug in the problematic one
and just keep trying it with the different stata cables to try and rule out that as a problem

but like i said above I just dont care anymore :) I deleted a load of stuff, have 500 free gigs atm.. I dont need the hd so im just gona leave it unplugged until I get curious and want to see if it can be saved
