We leave a few pallets up against some of the bales, cats usually walk up a pallet rather than jumping up on the bale. They do no harm when on top, its just when jumping up that they bore holes

I once saw a set of bales, that had a tire on every few bales, and a large net going over the top of the bales. (Tires kept the net off the bales). This was to stop birds landing and picking at the bales, but it may work for the cats as well.

pallets an tyres seem to be a good idea i wonder where you would get a net and how much would it cost the feckers ruined alot of them

If you know anyone with the old-type creosote...do the external bales with a paint roller (not much needed). The fumes keep the pussys away. tried and tested;)

Would it not taint the silage?

A couple of years ago one of the preservative ingredients was removed due to its carciogenic qualities.
I've used it lightly on bales and it kept the moggies off and the silage was fine
The newer stuff doesnt seem as potent

You can get cat repelant in your garden center. Apparently its lion dung from zoos. the cats smell a much bigger cat and stay clear

<snip> and <snip>. No more cats.

    [MOD]
It's now illegal, except in VERY limited circumstances, to lay poisoned bait, so let's not pursue this particular line any further.
