smart charger problem

ok so i just got this smart charger http://www.hobbyairsofter.com/Airsoft-Accessories/Batteries-and-Chargers/Dual-Automatic-Charger and i have a fair idea on how to use it. i know when to change it on the left to different cells i just have no clue on what the 500 or 1000 is on the right. can anybody help me with this?

Any battery under 1000 mAh you charge at 500mAh. Any battery 1000mAh or over (i.e. all batteries you're going to be using) you charge at 1000mAh.
