Trying out gear

Just wondering, I'm in the market for another amp, and was asking myself if other people have a certain routine for trying out new gear, or even certain songs they play.

I usually just fiddle mindlessly with the controls and whack out whatever tune or rhythm's stuck in my head at the time, but I know a guy who sits down and plays a certain couple of songs as a fair test situation.

    Anybody else got weird rituals/routines?

Just out of curiosity, do any of the shops around Dublin have a sound booth where you can properly try out an amp? If you can't crank it in the shop, then how can you make an informed decision on the purchase?

Waltons on George's street do. Terrible selection of amps though.

The lads in MusicMaker also let you crank it, but there's always tonnes of people there if you're a bit self conscious, my playing's gone to the dogs but I tend to wail away anyways.

I am self-conscious alright and would be reluctant to play loud with others around, unless they are annoying little spotty teenagers of course.
