Sat Nav for European Use

I want to buy a Sat Nav for use in Germany in a few weeks time. Preferences are for 4-5inch screen, good battery life and easy of future updating.

Unfortunately I'm fairly new to these things and I don't want to make any avoidable newbie decisions when I buy.

I've looked at the TOMTOM Via 120 which Curry's are pushing for around €150. The spec on paper looks good, but is there better I could / should buy for around the same money. I don't mind spending a bit more to get the right device!

For a bit more you could get the Go1000 or Go1005 with European maps and live services.
Either way sick with TomTom or Garmin and there will be no newbie mistakes.

Thanks! Where's the best place to buy?

EDIT**They seem to be nearly twice the price of the one I mentioned earlier

They will be €200+ . Didn't know what you meant by a bit more ..:D
They will be pretty much the same price range everywhere.
    I find Harvey Normans good.

I misread the price on Harvey Normans. Thought it was €299 when in fact it was €229 :). It's €299 on mysatnav.ie

That was for the 1000, but Harvey's looks like it is UK & ROI maps only. I'll call instead and suss it for myself

AFAIK the European maps are only €30 or €40 more.

I'd recommend purchasing a Garmin that includes free map updates for the life of the device. There is a good range here ....

Garmins that include Free Lifetime Updates are much much better value in the long run.
You have to pay every single year to keep your tomtom up to date.

I agree they are good value but they are tied to a device. With TomTom the map is assigned to an account and can be transferred to a different device.

Hi KoolKid, You are comparing apples with sprouts!

The tomtom transfer option only applies for the 12 month period that relates to a single update purchase. ..... Am I correct?

I curious as to how tomtom filters out abuse of this facility. What's to stop someone updating three different satnavs in the one year for one fee?

Only one device can be connected to any account at any given time.
There is a limit on the number of times you can transfer your account in a given period. (Not sure of the exact details/times).

I will always recommend Garmin or TomTom . They do offer different services & different ways re updating maps.
The Garmin lifetime map deal in generally good, but I would love to see some flexibility with it.
TomToms maps are bought via an account & a different device can be connected to that account if something were to happen a device or you simply upgrade. They also have MapShare , where you can make your own corrections & choose to use other users corrections. You are , in a way, getting maps updated daily.
