What input ports does the display have? If it has VGA you could go VGA from laptop into monitor, if only DVI you would need a DVI port on the laptop etc. More info will help see what will work for you! :)

I assume you are talking about an Apple Cinema Display. Unless it's a very old one, it's mini Displayport only. They are really only designed to be used with Macs. You'd probably need a very expensive convertor box to use with a PC.

Yeah cinema display, it's not that old..

Ports on the back, 3 USB and cable built into the screen that allows me to connect the display to the iMac

What kind of port is it? It is probably a proprietry Apple port like mini dvi as sad professor says so you'll need to buy a expensive converter (and possibly something to do the analog to digital conversion if your laptop only has VGA).
As with all apple systems they lock you in to their own stuff, making it hard like this to use it with other devices, like the iphone that is the only modern phone I know of that doesn't use a standard Micro USB/Mini USB cable for data and charging...
