    Walk by this almost every day, while walking the dog. If you rotate it you can get a better view of it. not sure if natural or man made.

    I'd say a plough or a vehicle took a chunk out of the stone.
    What's the cylindical object over to the right of the stone, in the first picture?

    I would say this is natural. As slowburner said, a plough probably took a chunk of it but nothing remarkable about it otherwise.

    Fair play to you for keeping your eye out though OP!

    Thanks for reply lads, the only thing I,ll say is, the hollow is smooth to the touch, so do not know about a knock. Don't know enough about geology, but could it be a nodule of a different type of rock that fell loose? Also I can see a face, with the hole acting as one of the eyes.!

    There was a stone like that in my entrance yard, where the iron gate slotted in to the ground. Years of the iron pole being jammed down had nicely carved a similar hole. Any old gates about ?
