Air-Con died (Octavia RS 2010)

As I was parking the car the other day I thought I was hearing added engine noises but I could not see anything and all the warning lights were OK so I continued driving the next day but I noticed that the air con was no longer cooling the interior. The fans were blowing but bringing in almost warm air. I checked the fusebox but that was OK. The car has leather seats and its a nigh mare driving if it gets even a little bit warm outside. I brought the car to the dealership and asked them if they would come out and have a quick look at it (i.e. to determine if it was compressor, leakage or something third) but they almost laughed at me and told me that I would have to book-in the car and that the chances were that it could be the coolant [in my view, the coolant does not go instantly] or the compressor. Bringing it in on Tuesday
The car came with 2 year warranty which has expired in January. How would you go trying to get a deal if the compressor has gone. I cannot afford a new one and my understanding is that it costs some 700 Euro!

If that's their attitude and your warranty is up then don't bother going to them. A reputable independent garage will be a better bet.

However, on such a new car, I'd call Skoda Ireland and get their explanation for such a failure so soon...having said that, don;t hold your breath for any help from them.

A look at the A/C compressor will tell a mechanic if the clutch on it is working correctly and a diagnostic check will give information on the refrigerant pressure etc.

If you were hearing a noise then the compressor seems like a possibility as a loss of refrigerant wouldn't cause any noise.

Thanks for that. I heard that noise once only to e honest. I've seen an add for fast fit who seem to be doing regassing for 40 euro so might bring the car there tomorrow.

Was it a mechanical noise or a hissing noise?

Not 100% sure anymore as I was not paying to much attention at the time but I would have said it was a a mechanical noise.

Make sure they have the correct equipment that will pressure test the A/C system before adding gas.
