When something breaks that you don't "have to fix"

I was telling my friend about how when something breaks on the car that I don't have to fix, i.e. doesn't interfere with the driving then I find some other way to compensate for it.

For instance, my first car was a citroen saxo and the horn didn't work so if I pulled up outside someones house to collect them I would put the car out of gear and rev it :p

With the polo, the window washers got blocked and I was waiting for my father to fix them, but certainly wasn't going to leave the car parked up, if the window got dirty I would just drive into a good sized puddle at decent speed so it would splash my window and then use the wipers, I got very good at this and knew all the best spots, no potholes etc.

Any other peeps do stuff like this?

My brakes no longer work so I just slow with the gears and then gently bump into a solid looking tree or wall

Also my headlights seem to be broken for some reason so I use the torch on my phone

I'm not sure how to react to this one. It's ridiculous, and yet still somehow I like it.

I fix everything that goes in the car regardless of how insignificant it is. If its only a minor cosmetic thing that no one else will see - it still has to be fixed!

Fix your car. Don't rely on daddy. Funny thread makes my teeth itch...

Had an airbag light on the dash so just used some double sided tape to stick a whoopy cushion to the steering wheel.

Ah sure when my dipped headlights dont work i use my main beam headlights so i can see the road and dont give a feck about anybody else :rolleyes::rolleyes:

But honestly if anything goes in my car no matter what i get a new one or get it repaired.

It always amuses me why somepeople dont look after there cars and think its ok to do certain things like driving with one headlight working etc

    Good thread OP.

When my gear linkage broke 150 miles from home, in the middle of the night, with six cranky Americans in the back, it didnt bother me.

I just threw the rulebook out the window and made it home ignoring stop signs, traffic lights, roundabouts etc.

Jesus lads, these are only small things, it's not like they are a danger to me or anyone else, they were only short term fixes for such problems.

A broken horn is one of the most dangerous things possible! Plus it might indicate that the car was previously crashed.

Try dirty windows with frozen washers in the middle of snow when driving :D You won't find any puddle but just lots and lots of slush..

Not half as head-wrecking as a needless double-negative. Why use one word, when 2+ will do ?? :p

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

What colour is it? If it turns green I'd definitely change it...

Not mine, but a friends window wiper motor died and while he was waiting for a replacement, had a small rope attached to either wiper and fed through the car so he could wipe the rain off in 2 smooth arms movements.

I drive an old passat and it's a perfect example of its common electrical faults. They're small things like one of the rear electric windows doesn't work but it doesn't bother me. I dont use it! And the beepy noise when you leave your lights only works when it feels like it.

Apply the NASA fix. If it hasn't caused a problem yet, ignore it because it's probably harmless.

That's the attitude that gets people halfway to space. And halfway back again.

It's that mentality that gives Fiat a bad name...

I'm the complete opposite. If its broke I'll replace it, no questions. No excuse to be a complete lazy arse with a car that you are driving

My engine stopped working so I cut a hole in the floor and did a Fred Flintstone.
Actually, I once drilled a hole in the floor of my ancient Mini to let the water out. And the throttle cable broke on my mate's car so we drove home with a bit of string attached to the throttle, out the bonnet and back in the window. Ah the good old days, now you need a degree in computer science and a laptop to do anything.

People that can't use their lights properly or drive without their lights in working order are an absolute nuisance on the road. The hint is the name, i.e. "fog" lights, oh I wonder what they're for? "Parking" lights, oh I wonder when I should use them? And all of the lights should be in proper working order, one headlight working is not safe, especially in areas with no other light source such as street lights.

err, more so than brakes? Or Lights? My horn is only beeping very quietly the last few weeks, I'm getting it fixed tomorrow now as it is more dangerous than having an eight inch spike as a headrest, apparently. I save up the littlies and get them fixed at the one time, driving transits, you get used to "items" not working, like locks, doors, electrics, engines etc.
