Hi everyone, need genuine advice and personal opinion on this one. I got split last night in a club game, the butt of somebodys Hurley went in through my faceguard and into my eye.(like what happened Henry Shefflin in '04). I was wearing a Cooper Helmet. Looked at the faceguard afterwards, and the handle of the Hurley can easily fit through there. I am obviously now concerned about this, so my question is what is the safest helmet out there? What helmet has the safest faceguard? If needs be I'd stick my Cooper but if not I'd be strongly tempted to buy a Mycro. What helmet is the best? The other side of the story is is that it was a freak accident, a one in a million thing it probably won't happen again. Am I being too precautious? All help appreciated .

Could happen with any helmet. Just so you know, Coopers aren't covered under the GAA's new insurance standard launched a couple of years ago. Only Marc, Azzurri and Mycro helmets are.

As Mountainlad said, this could happen with any helmet, even a full motor racing helmet wouldn't protect you 100%. I would advice just making sure that whatever helmet you get if comfortable and is ISO compliant (this will ensure your insurance is valid)

Pure fluke of an accident i m afraid. if you designed a face guard that the butt of a hurley would nt fit through you wouldnt see out of it and i dont think anybody wants a plastic visor!

From experience the Mycro is the sturdiest of the bunch, the Azzurri is a good bit weaker in places . I ve never tried the Marc but if its certified it must be ok. Whatever about the faceguard get a helmet where your ears are well protected, i got a nasty gash on the ear last year because the protection on the Cooper was non existent

Just a point on this, i can never understand why no one has manufactured a perspex visor like ice hockey players use. Both are incredibly fast and tough sports but the perspex visor would offer better visibility than looking through the bars of the helmet.
The only thing i could think of is that it might shatter but have never seen it happen
