Macbook External Monitor Adapter Conundrum

    Hey fellas,

So I bought a macbook pro a couple of weeks back. I've been PC forever but thats besides the point. Fact is I don't know a huge amount about this machine and one thing i've having trouble with is pairing it up to my PC monitor. The monitor in question is a Dell u2711 with a native res of 2560x1440. I bought a mini display port to HDMI cable but this isn't what I need as it's only allowing me to display a 1080p connection. I gather it's possible to get full res with a mini display port cable to dual link DVI, but this is an extremely expensive cable if purchased from apple (101euro?) There has a to be a slightly cheaper way.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Thanks for looking!

Just buy a mini-displayport to displayport cable. Should cost you a fiver or so. Does NOT need a special Apple cable.

Just note that the laptop has a MINI displayport, while the monitor has a fullsize displayport.

Here is the best deal on the exact cable you need: http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-com-Mini-DisplayPort-Adapter-Cable/dp/B002XVYZ82

Do not bother with DVI adapters etc, this will be a nightmare (expensive active adapters etc). You do not need to consider this as you have an excellent monitor that has a dispayport socket.
