when is the expiry date of insurance, is it day of purchase one year later?

if i bought a policy 22/05/12 would it expire 22/05/13?

You can stick anything down (once the dates stack up).

    The system's aren't integrated.

More often than not I don't have my insurance details to hand when I'm taxing the car so I just make something up.

I noticed it few times, that on some policies it says that cover is valid from 0:01 on commencing day to 23:59 on renewal day.
I'm wondering then what happens if someone has an accident on 0:00 between the policies period.

I'm not sure what would happen in the case of an accident, but a couple of years back i forgot to pay my premium. The policy was due to expire on a Sunday night and I had intended to pay the premium the Friday before. I got a lift to work on the Monday morning because I assumed that I was not covered, rang the insurance company later to explain the situation and they said it was fine, that they automatically provide cover for 7 days after the expiration date. Not sure if the outcome would have been the same if I had been calling to say I'd been driving to work that morning and been involved in an accident.
