Roundabout

Really after putting me off driving today was going around a roundabout got stopped at lights, some bloke £*&$£!&* stops beside me on the right. When the lights turn green he proceeds to drive in towards me and push me right over to the curb on my left (the tyres where starting to rub on the curb) It was literally millimetres between the two cars, i had nowhere to go, curb on one side him on the other.

The road off the roundabout only has room for one car. I didn't stop, I kept going believing i was in the right and he was trying to cut me up??

Heres a little drawing of it that's not very good :pac:

    ORANGE is me
    PURPLE is him

Who was right / who was wrong?

You were in the wrong lane on the roudabout, you should only be in that lane if your taking the first exit.

As for where you nearly got squez, it's a case of last there should have yielded and if you weren't at the gap first then it's your fault.

No he was in the correct lane. You should use the left lane for the first AND second exit.
If you were on the roundabout first you would have had right of way.
Also, seeing as he was the one crossing lanes, he should ensure that it is safe for him to turn into your lane.

    First and second exit.

He pulled up on my right just as the lights went green.. is was basically side by side up that little bit of road. I though being on the left it was my right of way? as in he had to come onto my side...

Just edited it a few mins ago, left that part out by accident.

    Incorrect.

You can use that lane of you're taking the first or second exit.

Depends on the roundabout. Some are left lane for left turn only, some are right lane for right turn only. Find it on google maps and read the markings on the road.

There should be an arrow on the road blending the lanes into one. Which roundabout is it and we can look on google maps?

The vast majority are straight on, and left. In fact I've never seen a roundabout which only allows people going straight on to be in the right hand lane, this would cause serious traffic problems as it takes longer to get out of the right-hand lane.

Some might not agree with this but assuming you were accompanied by full license driver, i would of let him crash into you and claim off his insurance.

When turning left or going straight you always keep left as possible. Same on roundabouts too. He was wrong, you were in the right.

    OP was in correct lane,
But wether I'm in the right or not in this situation I would let the car on my right take the exit ahead of me considering the alternatives.

Google maps/street-view of the roundabout will probably give people a better idea OP.

That was running through my head alright. Its the only reason i kept moving and didn't stop like he wanted me to. Really can't believe we didn't hit with how close it was. Thinking about it now,I probably would have been in trouble if we did hit..

Seeing as you were both stopped at a set of lights it doesn't really matter imo who came off the roundabout at which time. The pace of the traffic moving off in front of you once the light goes green will dicate how the two lines of traffic merge into one.

Simply because of this line, you're in the wrong imo.

This is the roundabout. Was a lot like this then he came in on top of me.

Incorrect IMO - The person 'in possesion' of the lane as it stands has the right of way (right to proceed..) It's up to the person that wishes to merge or change lanes to give way. It's not a race from the line to see who can take off the fastest.

You were in the correct lane for exiting the roundabout, therefore IMO you had the right of way. He should have only moved into your lane when it was safe to do so.

Op, ye were both in the correct lane. You stay in the left lane of the roundabout, outer side of the roundabout when taking the 1st/left exit, 2nd/straight ahead exit, keep in the right lane, inner side of the roundabout and then move into the left when taking the 3rd/latter exit. Though one of you should have given each other right of way otherwise you were either going too slow caused an obstruction or he was impatient and going to fast. Generally you be on a roundabout at 2nd gear but best to move on promptly.

I had a few honks at me for moving on two slow or too tightly, I was in the correct lane on a roundabout but there was slow moving traffic, I did try to get away promptly and quickly as possible but still honked at as I came off the roundabout. I took a left turn and still honked at which I thought was a bit inconsiderate considering I am a learner driver, I couldn't move pass to take the left turn until the car ahead moved on due to the slow moving traffic. The driver behind me was just impatient. I always try to do the safe thing though might do things tightly to get away quickly without causing an obstruction.

Generally give those on your right and those already on the roundabout right of way.

I think was down to who had right of way, he probably had right of way if you met him before taking the left exit though if you were on the roundabout before him you had right of way over him, he shouldn't have come on top of you like that and given you more space to move.

Were there two lanes on the roundabout for each exit? One going the opposite and vice versa or were the two lanes going the same way??? Its a bit confusing looking at the google map. But if ye were both on the same lane, it depended who had right of way to be honest. You kept left, in the left hand lane, once you were on the roundabout before him you had right of way but if he were approaching while you were about to go onto the roundabout and may have cut in on him and he on top of you then he had right of way. That is what I think it boiled down to as to who had right of way. Ye were both in the correct lane and position.

The left lane is typically the more correct lane. You know that for the future.
To have a future you need to avoid crashes. If someone is doing something wrong and dangerous, get the f*** out of their way. Call them whatever names you want as you safely drive behind them. Don't play chicken with the rules of the road and bad drivers.

I know the lights change the conditions completely but do some DVDs not show that when you are in right lane and wants to exit, force any person on the left to slow down to give you the way (otherwise you cant exit the roundabout)

    NO.
Unless Jason Statham or Michael Schumacher has made an instructional DVD.

Maybe this DVD was filmed on the Champs-Elysees?
If you find yourself in a situation that you cant exit a roundabout the correct way to deal with it is to continue around the roundabout. If you're still not sure, take another exit and stop in a safe place where you have time to look again at road markings and signs.

If you unsure where to go just go around the roundabout again.
