Blood/pull filled bump after root canal /crown on tooth

    Hi All,

I've already raised this issue with my dentist and wasn't really happy with the response. I'm not sure if i could go for a second opinion or if this can happen some times.

Basically I had to get a root canal on the molar second from the back, in april 2011. All was well after the root canal, and November 2011 I got a crown put on it. Again all was fine. Earlier this year I noticed a blood filled bump at the tooth where I had the root / canal crown. A few weeks later the crown came out, so I went back to have it put back in. Then I asked the dentist about the blood filled bump he said it was normal and just to use corsidal.

So i started using corsidal and being very careful with brushing etc. Basically every few days, this fills up with blood/puss. Some times it goes away for a week or so, but then comes back.

I'm assuming this isn't normal. Has the root canal failed?

See your current dentist, or another dentist if you'd feel more comfortable having a second opinion, at a time when the swelling is present. Also have an xray taken of the tooth.
Could be periodontal(gum) disease, could be failed root canal, could be other. Whichever, no, it's not normal to have pus coming from your gum:(

Root canal could have failed (if the crown came out this is highly likely as the leakage would have wrecked the root canal) also crowns should not come out. Sounds like you need a second opinion, has an x-ray been taken?

Thanks guys just confirmed what I was thinking anyway. Thought it was possibly related to the crown coming out. My dentist just rebonded the crown back in, no X-ray.

I tend to give people the benifit of the doubt, but should he have known this?

Just trying to work out if I should cut my losses with a dentist I've trusted for the last 15 years or so....

If there was no obvious signs of a swelling on the particular day he happened to see you, or if the swelling was described/heard as bleeding as opposed to pus, fair enough. Also 15years is a long time, if you've had similar work done in the past with no problems,is there a need to adopt a "one strike&you're out" approach..? ;)
However it's your tooth& your money,& the problem requires investigation& likely treatment of some form.

it sounds like you have an infection - i would go to a different dentist to get proper advice you may need antibiotics - it happened to a friend of mine not so long ago,he had to go to a different dentist to get advice - always go with a second opinion if youre not sure of the dentist and what he/she tells you..

Fully agree on the second opinion part unless OP feels there was a misunderstanding.
Any infected(pus filled)area is best drained- antibiotics are not a longterm solution.

oh ya id say get it drained too, antibiotics can allieviate any further problems, probably better for aftercare..i would see a second dentist, some dentists nearly push you out the door when you come back with a problem - its not a good manner, but neither is having needles procedures and moneygrabbing.

i havent stuck with the same dentist i tend to shop around, and take it from there, theres always good deals to be had,i still find it nervewracking going to a dentist though..

It was a blood blister the last day he would of seen me to rebond the crown.

It's the first root canal / crown I've had. And on a personal level he's a lovely man, so in many ways I would trust his experience.

But to be honest i have been wondering if I should look at changing. I don't mind paying top dollar if the service is good, but don't like to feel like I'm being fobbed off etc..

Go with your gut instinct so, you need to be comfortable& happy with the service. Good luck!

The question of antibiotics keeps coming up, antibiotics are like mopping up the water from a leaking sink without fixing the leak, nothing is solved, nothing is fixed and it will come back. Please people stop advising antibiotics, dentistry is done with your hands not a pen.

Getting a molar root canal treatment with a general dentist is a bit of a lottery&like the lottery it's rare that you win.

First thing I learned before goin into the clinic:

Treat the cause, not the symptom

If the underlying cause can be found, then best to treat that. If the symptom is just constantly treated without treating the cause, its never goin to get better
