Hmmm.. there's something a bit fishy about this, in my opinion.

Firmware updates are usually free, or to fix a problem, aren't they? Seems like they've went to a lot of effort for no real reason. Either this is their answer to a 7D Mk II (and they're going to sell it to us) or the firmware update is going to remove something and they want to disguise it.

They could hardly adjust the camera to prevent it from functioning with third party battery grips or such, could they? Or make life very annoying for owners of third party lenses?

It sounds like an amazing update - but I'll be at the back of the queue to get it, for the time being.

EDIT: Or they're trying to generate more interest in the 7D to sell more? (Though I doubt that's it, as I think the 7D is probably a little too good as it is, and is only creating unnecessary competition for their newer cameras. I thought they'd have tried to forget it exists by this point)

We will see in August when it is released, They have never charged for a firmware update cant see them doing it now.
I agree I think the 7Dmkii is not going to happen not with this update.
This looks like we will have the mkii.
Like you KKV I will wait and see what the feed back is like.

i personally think the reason is so they can delay the inevitable 7dmk2 for another year or two before release.

personally i will be making the jump from 400d crop to a ff 5d3 as u will find that going from crop to ff ofers a bigger jump on IQ then upgrading to another corp sensor

When I was buying the 7D it was a fairly long thought-out process. It was a mix between that or the 5DII.

I don't believe there's any real-life difference in the image quality, if I'm honest. In side-by-side comparisons, full frame can sometimes edge the crop sensor (generally at the edges of the frame, it'd seem, it's sharper) but not enough that a quick crop or RAW sharpening wouldn't fix.

Using the 7D as a standalone camera, and not comparing it directly to the 5DII, I haven't noticed any issues with corner quality, personally, so I find that the different in real-life shooting is negligible, and not justifiable of the price difference between the two.

(in saying that, I'd still like to pick up an original 5D on the cheap, just to have a full frame camera to play with. A little extra toy in my bag of tricks, so to speak, should I ever need or want it for anything, though so far, I've never had the need).

Likewise when I bought my 7d. The 5d gives a little edge on high iso, maybe 1 stop, but the faster focus engine on the 7d and new layout (over the 5dmk2) won me over. I had tried both before purchasing.

Fwiw, I traded up from a 500d and the jump in IQ was substantial - and it loses very very little to the 5dmk2

7d is great no doubt I was close to buying one but decide to buy glass first and then wait to see a 7d with ff sensor.

The 5d3 is the perfect camera for a me. I am saving up for It

Yep, just updated mine. The extra frame buffer is nice.

Anywhere online discussing this at all?

Quite keen to hear people's opinions who use third party equipment (generic battery grips, Sigma lenses, etc.).

I've had zero issues so far. My Sigma 10-20 works fine.

I have no issues either, I have noticed my 100L is much more responsive.

Why? What has the firmware done to change that?
Could it be the new driver/firmware placebo effect? :)

I don't think its placebo, I noticed the focus was locking on a lot quicker. I will play a bit more over the weekend.

Okay. I had a bit of time this morning and I had a closer look at this. Yeah the 100L is a different lens as is the 50 f1.8. They both are focusing faster and are locking on and holding focus better.

I no longer can find my original disks. Anyone know if there is a need ( or even a means...?) to back up the existing firmware (V1.2.7 in my case) before upgrading.......

    Thanks

There would be no need to back it up as you can not go back to a previous version.
