Irish Derby

    7 horses declared :
Camelot, Imperial Monarch, Astrology, Akeed Mokeef, Born to Sea, Light Heavy, Speaking of Which.

Plenty of rain around this weekend so I'd imagine the going will be soft. Therefore I can see an upset, maybe... !!

I'm going to take on Camelot with his stable companion Imperial Monarch. Handles heavy, unlucky in French Derby and has plenty of class about him. Not sure who'll ride him yet. Worth a 10er anyway.

If the ground was fast I'd probably have gone for Welds Speaking of Which, who seems to be improving rapidly, but I'd be wary of him staying now.

Camelot may be hard to beat, but I'll always take on such a short price fav ;)

That's a pity, the race had a great shape for each-way punters with 8-11 runners. Also the "without Camelot" market would have been interesting e/w with 9-11 runners. Still, all the main contenders have stood their ground and it should still be an interesting and informative race. At least Camelot wasn't taken out, that would have been a disaster.:)

Weld said he will pull Speaking Of Which out if any further rain falls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

He's definitely out so as the forecast seems to be awful.
Pity, gonna be a poor turnout.

on the ground Astrology has to be a cracking bet @ 6/1 without Camelot

Astrology is surely to risky to back after his flop at Ascot last week. Value for me in the w/o market is Light Heavy at 13/2. This has been his aim for a long time having skipped the Epsom showpiece he should go well at a price. Dont think any will get near Camelot though. Will be doubling him up with Novelist in the Deutsches Derby on Sunday.

How big a concern is the ground for Camelot?

If it gets to bad they will pull him out. Doubt they would risk his unbeaten record running him on ground he cant handle.

I wonder is the possibility of heavy ground is the reason they kept Imperial Monarch in ??
I think IM would win this if Camelot doesnt run....

I'm more interested as to why Ladbrokes have not shown up prices yet. Camelot was 1/4, now 1/3. Imperial 8/1 and backed in as close as 5/1
Weather supposed to be ok but if it rains Camelot will be pulled I say

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

had a punt on Astrology @ 80/1 on Betfair
if Camelot gets pulled, I'll still be getting 16/1 with the 80% RF.

Why oh why would the race Camelot on heavy ground?? I really don't get O'Brien sometimes, huge risk, could easily bottom the horse if it turns into a slog.

The clerk reckons it could be good to soft by tomorrow. The curragh dries out very quickly. Aob said today that ground may not be ideal and imperial could be a doubt with a shoe problem

So there could be 5 runners if the ground is heavy - delightful.

What are they playing at running Astrology so soon again, the horse obviously wasn't over his Derby exertions at Royal Ascot and now there running him in another tough race (in ground that they reckon the horse doesn't handle) today 20 days after blowing up at Ascot.:confused::confused::confused:

    BAFFLING!

I reckon Camelot could easily be turned over today.

With the ground so soft and a classy looking field I wouldn't be surprised. If Astrology could be guaranteed to bounce back i'd prob back him as he will get a soft lead but failing that i'd be on Imperial Monarch

Problem with his hoof, some infection ruled him out. Left them with no choice.

Camelot by a few lengths from a fast finishing Born To Sea and a one paced Akeed Mofeed, with Light Heavy and Astrology bringing up the rear.

5s on Camelot after the detections

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

    1/6 in places !!
Awful pity not more runners, but you never know, with the ground heavyish there could be an upset..... :o

with IM out what are Camelot's honest chances. im contemplating a serious bet on him but i keep thinking of dunguib at cheltenham a few years back

He should win but his chances are reflected in his price. Havn't seen any of the racing yet but if the ground is very soft i'd avoid to be honest with you.

it's a case of should win, but heavy ground like this has a tendency to throw up strange results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

    Interesting

If your team Ballydoyle you prob just gave a sigh of relief and thank god that's over. He plugged it out but unable to show his usual brilliance.

Fair play to born to sea. Really dug it and saw out the 1m4f really well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,641 ✭✭✭andyman

Camelot too good, but Born To Sea looked so much better than before, as expected. Excellent race from him. Murtagh said before that he's starting to take from his mother's side and that definitely showed. A very comfortable second to one of the best. Nothing to frown upon at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Just glad he kept his unbeaten record intact !
Born to Sea gave him a wee fright.

I'd imagine Camelot will be given a rest now. Magnier seemed to suggest the St Ledger was def on the agenda. Wonder what his prep will be??

I'm bulling. Had a quick look at the early races and no sign of the market so figured it was on tomorrow, sitting here watching **** on the telly.

Anyone know why it was on so late?

hopefully it goes back to sunday next year, just couldnt settle into a late saturday afternoon/evening derby. i lumped big time on camelot and had a little worry when he pulled left into BTS but thank god he hung on. took him at 2/9 in ladbrokes

I knew I wasn't mad, when I had the scan through I thought to myself that it was on a Sunday as I was at it three years ago and remember being pissed off that I could not go mad drinking as I had a meeting first thing in the morning.

Hard to be critical of any horse on ground that he didn't like but it had to be the poorest Irish derby field ever and he couldn't/didn't sparkle. I am beginning to suspect that we will probably never find out just how good this horse could be as the Leger should be a penalty kick for a horse of his class. There are three weeks to the Arc so that might be considered if he has a very easy time but he is more likely to finish off in the Breeders Cup mile and a half turf.

I'd think the St Ledger will be his next race, followed by the Arc. So the STL will kinda be his prep race, if that makes any sense.

Quality animal, and dug this race out real well. Already the O'Brien spin is on regarding this is his best ever. Think he has said that about a dozen horses, Coolmore's next moneymaker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,775 ✭✭✭✭Slattsy

Well the St Ledger looks like an easy race, so he could stroll to success in that, once the ground isnt heavy it could be an ideal prep for the Arc.
