Exam Results Rechecks

    Hi all,

I just received my results for 2nd year Arts. Passed but I was really hoping to get a 2.1 as I am hoping to do a post-grad so I wanted a 2.1 to increase my chances of getting a course. I received an average of 58.75% for this year. I am wondering what to do now in order to see if I can get the 60% through maybe a recheck in some of my modules? Is there anybody out there who was in a similar situation or anybody with advice on what to do.

    Cheers!

Do you think you deserve a higher mark?
You could always just work harder next year.

I was in a different NUI but there's usually a day designated for you to go and speak to your department. I was .1 off a first overall in my degree and spoke to both departments about getting it. In the end one of them gave me the additional marks to push me over the line. Worst thing they can say is no, but it worked out for me.

I'm in a similar situation, less than half a percent off a 1:1 for 2nd Arts, according to someone in the Arts office, overall grades are never raised in 2nd year, only in Final year.
I'm emailing the education officer in the SU now to see if I have any other options, just in case it could be done - it's just so fricking close to the 1:1, I wouldn't be bothered otherwise!

2nd year though? I thought that only forms part of your final degree if you want it to?

Only if the average of both years is lower than Final Year results alone. However, I wouldn't rely on that.

Ah I remember that. Got a 69.5 in second year as they are reluctant to push up grades unless it's in final year.

Best advice is to work harder in final year. If your final year results are higher, the 2nd year results are not counted.

Yeah, I fully intend for next year's result to be (1%) higher, and I'm not too worried about the effect that it would have on my overall degree grade as such, it's moreso the fact that it's just so close to the 1:1, and it would just be nice to have 3 years of 1:1s (if next year goes well enough!).

After getting advice from the lovely people at the SU and the exams office, I think I'll try consulting with the lecturers of one of my subjects, and possibly getting a recheck if they recommend it for any of the modules. I only need a 1% increase in 1 subject to bring the average above 70%, so who knows, it might just work out for me!

As for the OP, if there was a particular module that you'd feel could go up, or even a sympathetic lecturer who would tell you straight where you stand, it would definitely be worth checking it out. There's a consultation day on Monday when all lecturers are supposed to make themselves available to students, and the recheck requests must be in by the following Monday (the 9th).

SOunds like you'll be alright. I found final year a lot easier than 2nd year as I got more choices in modules and got a 1.1 handy enough

    You'll be sound I reckon.

    Thanks!

So if I got 60% or more in 3rd year then my overall degree would be a 2.1 and the 2nd year results would not be counted?

Just the fact that I was hoping to do an extra year after 3rd so the 2.1 would obviously look better than a 2.2

The system is that if the final year grade is higher, then that is taken alone, but if second year is higher, the two are averaged together and that will be your final grade. As you say though, it would be nice to have the higher grade on the transcript at the end of the day!

Care to explain the mathematics behind that line of thought?

Fair enough, doing the maths a second time, it's actually a 2% raise that I'd need. Obviously, I'm not a maths student - my calculation was flawed the first time around, and I don't always check my work very well :o.

Without getting into specifics about each module, my totals for each subject were 73.33% and 66.33%. The average of that gave me the 69.83%. If I was to rise 2% in one module in the first subject, the average goes up to 73.67%, and that gets me exactly to the 70% needed for the 1:1.
