I've been googling what license I need to tow a trailer and have got myself all confused. Basically, I have a provisional license for A, A1, M, B & W...I'm trying to figure out if i can add EB to my provisional or do i have to have a full license before I can get a provisional for towing?? I keep reading different things everywhere so all my googling has been no help what so ever!!

I don't know definitively but as an EB is an add-on to your B license I would assume that you would first need a full B license. There were, however, cases where a trailer could be towed on a B license only, the last time I checked (if the trailer was less than 750kg) but that was several years ago. I never did a test for it but they put it on my license when I got my EC license.

You could try your local motor tax office but as you are only on a provisional I would tend to err on the side of caution and give it a miss. There may also be insurance issues and a guard might not look too favorably on it if you are stopped.

The other major thing to consider is that towing a trailer is classed under a different category in the licensing scheme for a reason, it requires more experience and a different skill set than just driving.

    Hi Guys,

any difference in towing by car a twin axle trailer as opposed to a single axle?

Could you show me the legislation?

    Thanks!

Number of axles is completely irrelevant when it comes to towing trailers.
No one can show you any legislation about it, as no legislation mentiones number of axles.

You must remember about weight limits though.

You mush hold full B licence before you can apply for driving permit in category BE

Additionally on your driving permit category B, you are not allowed to tow any trailer.
You must hold full B licence to be able to tow any trailers.
